CDA Bike course change?

Hi, All - just joined EN and am looking forward to CDA.  Does anyone know if the bike course change has been resolved?  The IMCDA site still shows the previous course.

Comments

  • I am interested too.

  • I don't have any official information, but on iamtri.com there has been a lot of discussion about a potential bike course change. Here's one of the comments from a frequent contributor, Connie Price, "I just called an employee of WTC (so this is NOT rumor) the bike course is NOT official yet, but it is set to change for sure. It will NOT be the same and will NOT enter Hayden. The new course will go South!!!."

I hope I'm not just helping to spread rumors.
  • The bike course has been changed. A few weeks ago I emailed the mayor of Hayden and this is her reply:

I am so very glad you asked this question. While you are a Spokane resident, you are exactly who I wanted to appeal to when I lobbied to bring Ironman CDA through the City of Hayden. Our residents are not the reason that we are losing the bike course. They have been highly receptive to this event, as well as other events like the very popular Hayden Triathlon that I helped plan and run. Hayden residents LOVE the positive lifestyle and the economic benefits that are gained from Ironman CDA going through our city.

I know the Race Director, Mac Cavasar, very well. When I heard he was planning to change the course I had many meetings with him. The final meeting that I pulled together was with the Mayors of both Hayden and Coeur d'Alene; Chamber Presidents from Hayden (myself) and Coeur d'Alene; representatives from Hayden City staff, and from Lakes Highway District. I pushed and prodded and nearly begged for the course not to be changed. I even called appointed officials that serve on the Idaho Transportation Board! I was the only vocal person from Hayden that worked to keep the event.

Bottom line is that the City of Hayden Lake Council doesn't like the event going through their city, the City of Coeur d'Alene finds it cheaper to not bring the course up north, and Ironman CDA representatives think the course is safer and easier to manage on event day. I adamantly disagree with all of the reasoning. I think this event is about the economic benefit to the community and that we have done a disservice by changing the route.

Thanks for the question. Please pass on how passionate I am for economic strength in Hayden to anyone you may know in the area! I can use the votes of all of those that have realized good things from events like Hayden Triathlon and Ironman CDA.

    Best,

    Nancy
  • Wow, that's an unusually frank and honest letter. And the "cheaper, easier to manage" bit says a lot about where things are going.

  • Thank you Al! Plain spoken answer for sure.
  • Hmmm.

Will look forward to updates when anyone knows anything further.

    thanks.

  • Wow- that's some response. Thanks Al. I just hope the new route is as pretty as the old one. I was convinced to do IMCDA because of the rave reviews the beauty of the course was given by friends who have done it in prior years.
  • Loop down and around the lake might be fast and fun?

  • According to the "insiders" on iamtri the bike course for this year has been set.

One posted a video of the course: http://vimeo.com/35802363

    Here's a mapmyride: http://www.mapmyride.com/s/routes/v...e/49551254

    I can't confirm their accuracy.

  • So- sorta two double out & backs? Looks like lots of spectator opportunity around transition with riders passing through there multiple times. My husband would like that part.
  • I've ridden 95 into/out of CDA when I've ridden the motorcycle up to the race. It's basically a 2-4 lane highway, rolling, as you can see from the profile. This is significantly less scenic, country roads-ey then the course they've had for the last several years.

  • Color me not very happy about this. Looks like a high traffic road from the video - I'm assuming they'll have a lane blocked off for the cyclists, but I'm betting there will be a constant stream of traffic going by. Yuk. CdA is an early season race for us Northwesterners, but one of the chief draws has been the scenic course. Looks like I'll have to queue up for IMC in the future if I want Northwest scenery.

  • Robin,

Yep...while I understand Hayden not wanting the bike course through their town, though I've seen other discussions otherwise, I think WTC used this as an opportunity to jump on a much simpler = few aid stations = lower cost bike route. I think the setup of the bike course will be nearly identical to how they've done the Beeline Hwy for IMAZ, though I don't recall if that section of 95 has a center divider or median. If yes, I bet you'll turn left from CDA into the left two lanes (ie, traffic coming towards CDA) on 95. They will put all of the car traffic on the other side, southbound, of 95.

Sucks that they're not at least including the out and back on the lake, the first 12-16 miles of the course.

  • New bike course posted on the IMCDA site.

  •  So 4600 ft for the 112 miles?

To practice riding the course, enough shoulder to ride?  Planning ride weekends.

  • I finally got on the IM CDA site to look at the bike course. I pulled up my notes on the course when I did it in 2007.

    This part is the same:

I for one am glad not to see English Point road although I will miss the cows and the view of Hayden.
