4 weeks to IMC

HI all- figured I'd start up week 4. The weeks are starting to blend together... and I don't know about the rest of you but I am TIRED and hungry all the time. Came home from work last night, hubby cooked supper, I was supposed to go to the pool but I fell asleep on the couch for 45 minutes, and went to bed early. Need to rest up for that RR on Saturday- last one!!

I've planned my RR ride from my house, out to Nordegg, a small community out in the mountains west of where I live. Excited because it's a pretty ride, nice shoulder and I get to test out what race day is gonna feel like!!

Been getting in the open water a bunch, that sure makes a difference in my sighting ability, I find I have to look up a lot less than I did a few weeks ago.

I have a good game plan for my swim, and the bike is all dialed in... but I am feeling a bit lost about the run, I like to have a plan and without really being able to run further than 15 kms or 90 minutes beyond that I have no idea what to expect on race day!! I may post that question in the forum as I'd like to have a better sense of what my plan is, but I may just have to wing it.

Happy training everyone!!

  • Becky, I hear you on the TIRED business. Last week my energy levels (physically and mentally) reached an all time low. I could not get my butt out the door on Thursday to run - no desire and way too tired. I also took Friday off completely, stayed home from work and watched tv all morning. Saturday put my 4 hours in on my bike but had nothing in me to do the intervals. Rode it like a an ABP ride. Sunday, took it off as well.

Feeling much better and already seen an improvement in my run and swim on Monday. I'm also looking forward to my workouts this week. I'm not just looking at them as putting in the time and resenting them.

I figured I was getting too close to digging myself in a hole and for what, at this point in the game.

Bring on the RR! Good luck everyone with this last big week of training.
  • I too have certainly been quite tired the last 2-3 weeks. More so than 2010 my first with EN. Might be that i am creeping towards 53yrs of age soon. Sat I did good on my 4hr ride, and once home sat down for a little nap and it ended up being 2hrs. Holly cow. Not sure how that -played into my sunday ABP but I had the best sunday ride in weeks.

FTP test tonight for me, was not sure I wanted to do it cuz I usually feel it in my right hammy for a couple of days. If windy like last test I will bag it.

Also, as today is Aug 1, I was so happy to see I made my goal weight based on where I was in 2010 going into IMC. FWIW i typically raced my previous 2010 IMs at about 183-185lbs (this is heavy for my hieght). Showed up at IMC 2010 at 164lbs and was so looking forward to doing 141miles 20lbs lighter and due to crash never got to feel it. So I set my goal this year to be similar wieght.

  • First day back on the bike in a week. It felt pretty good. I missed several wko's the past 2 weeks due to family vacation and other commitments. Hopefully Saturdays RR will go well. In a way the limited training was a good break because I was feeling really tired. Ready to put in another 2 weeks of hard training before I start my taper. Getting excited!!!
  • RR#2 in the books. Actually RR #1 for me. That said. I thought when I spent the weekend in July in Penticton doing BBweekend it was hot and i would not see that again, silly me. Hottest training day for me. Normally I am gone by 8am and it hovers around 16-20degrees (low 70 ferenheight) 4hrs later back home. Today got a 9am start due to family and i felt the heat all day. Likely did not drink enough and will feel it tomorrow however, the ride was good, not great but good and i had zero issues on the run even trying out new runners. stood in the cold pacific for 20min to flush the lower body then chow.

Hope all RRs went well. Taper time, ya about time too.

  • Hi all glad I am not the only one who is tired. And I can't eat enough. Always hungry.

Second RR yesterday and it went so much better than the last one. First, I didn't feel like killing myself at 4:30 this time. It was v hot in Seattle yesterday. 90 by the time I finished. I chopped up the ride into mentally handle able chunks. 90 mins on my regular weekday route, then my regular Saturday 4 hour ride, then another 30 min chunk on weekday route. Drank 4 20 oz bottles of Gatorade. Had two flasks of gu (espresso and berry). And then I did a trick that I am going to use in the race. At 2 hours I had a whole clif bar. Yummy. Then at 3 hours I had a red bull (!!!!), at 4 another clif bar and at 5 a red bull. The treats made me feel good. I repeated "enjoy the day" over and over and sang Elton John songs out loud to myself. My rule was 90 cadence, 140-50 watts or 30kph, to keep it in the box and not over cook it.

I covered 152k in 5:54:00. I took my time in transition, wiped myself down with a damp cloth (note to self for run bag. Damp facecloth in Baggie). Strapped on the water belt and got my nine year old to put as much ice down my front and back as she could manage (she liked that!). Then I jangled down the street in blazing sun. I had a hell of a time slowing down to 10min miles. I did a lot of walking to keep my pace down. In the end I only did 42 mins (the way the route worked out and I needed to get home early and earn some SAUs).

It was brilliant in every way. Off for my 90 min swim in open water (missed it earlier in the week due to work). Thank goodness for the taper!!!!
