2 Weeks to IMC!

Hola!

My oh my, did that go fast, or what???  Sheesh, it's actually LESS than two weeks go go!!! My apologies for being a litle AWOL.   Life has conspired to create the most crazy IMC build up to date for me.  Let's just say I'm typing this on a new PC (old one went TU - an entirely different kind of crazy getting back up and running) and just got home for the sixth time in four weeks.  Managed to get my training done but it was quite hectic!

Had a fabulous RR with our own lovely Ann Frost on Sunday.  The Penticton temp was slated to be mid 90s but my Garmin 800 registered as high as 102 on the climb to Yellow Lake.  It was my first big day with Infinit and it worked great even when it was warm.  Also got in two big swims in Lake Okanagan on Saturday and Monday.  It is very pleasant, indeed!

How is the taper going for y'all?  And the injuries big and small healing up nicely?

Hope to see ya'll soon in C-eh-N-eh-D-eh!!!

  • I know what you mean. Where did the time go! Can't wait to leave next Wed and leave everything behind. Are we going to try and get together before hand? It would be nice to meet everyone before the race.
  • I am arriving wed. Unless something more formal gets put together I plan to do my bike workout thur 11am from spray park (skaha beach) out east-side road to OK falls. Safer than navigating thru city. Swimming Fri am 830am meeting at the Sicamous (the peach area is way too busy for me). Glad to have any company.

On an asside, so looking forward to the 3x6min z4 workout tonight with only a swim tomorrow. That 2.5hr ride Sat will seem so easy i'll feel guilty yet smiling.

  • I would be up for meeting at 8:30 Friday morning for a swim, no idea where the sicamous is, but I'm sure I'll find it. We're camping at the South Beach Gardens RV resort across from Skaha Tim, I would love to join you on your ride and that way I can scope out some of the run course too. I'm not sure what I am going to have for internet setup (I am not a smart phone user... hoping the RV resort has wireless!!) so I should pre arrange my meetings I guess.

I am ready for this to be started... I am relieved to have started taper as the thought of another long training ride makes me cringe. The bike today was nice... just enough to get the blood flowing, but not enough to make me tired. Hoping Saturdays ride feels that good- I suppose it is pretty short compared to what we've been doing!! Looking forward to seeing some EN faces, I will not be sporting the EN singlet as I'm all tapped out for buying anything else for this race... but that does not mean I don't want to meet you all!!

  • I would be up for meeting at 8:30 am Friday as well. Like Becky, don't know where that is but will find it.

Thursday Bike, I'm assuming that would be part of the run course?  I have to check a map again.  I will have to check what we have planned that day.  I may want to head out earlier.

We are staying at the Shoreline Inn and are arriving Tuesday PM.

I'm toying with the idea of bringing my work laptop just for communication as I don't have a smart phone either.

I've been playing it really safe on the bike - no z4 all easy spin with a few pushes to z3. Hamstring is coming along nicely and I think it will be okay for the big day. I may just have to spin all the way but I will finish with pretty good legs for the run.

I will also not be sporting an EN singlet. I'm saving my last big expense for new tires (why are they so expensive?) and some finisher gear. Oh and some wine to celebrate with family and friends!

ps - Becky, thanks for adding a comment on my last dashboard post. I think I had an 'IM training brain' moment. But Rapp sure did a great job on that speech. I may just right 'fly' on my hand for inspiration.

  • Re: The Sicamous

Lakeshore Blvd fronts the main beach of Lake Okanagan (also where we finish our day).

As you stand on Lakeshore blvd facing beach the extreme right is anchored by the big Peach.

The extreme left of the beach is anchored with the Sicamous steamboat (not too far from where we turn around on run to finish). Parking is generally better at that end however washrooms are not as close as they would be at the Peach end.

The thursday ride is indeed along run course. The spray park as it is referred to is just before Skaha beach/marina. There is a parking lot, washrooms etc. The street is actually called lakeside rd if you are looking on ironman course bike/run maps. I am not set on an 11am ride, was just a starting point in discussions.

  •  Ooh boy, I've been lax in my attention to this group. I actually am racing in Penticton. I'll probably be getting there Wednesday evening, and would be interested in a bike ride on Thursday. I might be more interested in driving the bike course and riding the rollers and/or out and back section (which I regard as the crux of the bike course) .than "biking the run course" And a get together with EN folks aould be awesome on any day. I do plan to go to the big dinner and athlete's meeting, which are on Friday?

  • Hi!

I'm down for dinner and any workouts that are on our plan.  Not too picky about the location of either, just that the workouts are done earlier in the day (i.e. start before noon). Anyone who has preferences just start throwing out dates/times 'till some stick?

    FUN!!!

  • I'd like to bike on Thurs but my bike doesn't get there til that afternoon.

What about dinner, Thurs @ 6pm? Any suggestions as to where?
  • Dinner on Thursday would work for me as well, probably prefer that over Friday myself as I'll probably be frantically trying to decide what to put in my gear bags after the athlete meeting... just kidding, I have a list for that! Again, no idea where to go, but up for suggestions from anyone who has been there.

I will be at the splash park at whatever time Thursday, maybe a little earlier in the day would be better, beat the heat? Maybe meet at 9 am? I am okay with riding the run course as this is the only part I have not seen, I rode the hills last year and think I'm all set to tackle those!

All set... last run went very well today, saw the chiropractor for my last tune up, he figured my foot is pretty darn good, he's been working to get some of the scar tissue down and it's been cooperating- yea!!! Saw my massage therapist today as well, no major areas of concern so I am good to go!! Feeling great, still loving the taper world, figure that may last until Monday, at least I'll get to burn some steam off on Saturday!

So if anyone has suggestions for a place Thursday 6 pm for dinner where we can make reservations, that would be good, and feel free to chime in if you want to meet at any different times for the bike/swim.
Friday am- swim at the Sicamous, 8:30. I can go earlier as well, I'm sure I'll be up :-)

  • Humm, wonder if we should do this the EN way, get a captain who can at least be focal point.

Penticton is my second home, sort of speak, in fact I do eveything race morning inside city hall and just wander to the beach when it is time. So, that being said, unless an other wishes, maybe I'll let John know I will step up (and start with dinner reservations).

I will assume 'kid friendly place'. For us Cannucks, check your text plan cuz groupme is a US based phone number, I have unlimited local text but pay a $.50 sur-charge on international text. I am going to check into the BlackBerry app as it does not use the text feature.

For US folks, check your roaming rates, Canada is like 6th most exp place in modern world.

  • Yay Tim! Go for it!   *** Insert image of me with pom-poms! ***

  • Stupid iPad. Sorry for two blank entries above. Thanks Tim for being Cap'n.

Well I've swam twice, both times 1200 yards in 22:00. That should result in a 1:40 ironman swim. I have been riding the stationary bike for a week and today I ran for 6 miles. All activities are relatively painful but bearable. The question is, can I take the mental fatigue of hurting for 14 hours on race day. But I want to do this race even if it's just to complete it and not compete. Besides, isn't the Ironman supposed to be tough? That being said, I am in for any get togethers that you folks organize. We should be in town around 6 on Thursday, so dinner sounds great. I definately want to swim on Friday so that I can see how the wetsuit feels with my new shoulder. And I have never seen the run course. I rode the bike course last year, so I am good there.

Definitely check on your roaming rates, last year I used my smartphone to find a B&B and the bill showed that period cost me $30. I will be using the iPhone app for group me to communicate will all of you..
  • I will likely not be using any of the apps and such as we use a cell phone provided by my work, so I will just hope all decisions will be made before I leave on Wednesday! Thanks for stepping up Tim, sounds like you're the man with the local knowledge, makes is a bit easier!!

Glad to hear you're back in the game Steve, I hope race day find your shoulder willing to cooperate.

  •  this is supposed to be a reply to Tim, but it's ended up with Jenn - anyway Yeah Tim as team leader.

I am getting to Penticton on Wed - with husband and 9 year old in tow, so kid friendly for dinner on thurs would be great. Beer-friendly for hubby also appreciated.

I am gathering people going for a ride on Thurs am. I think what I will do is a hill recon with Hubby. so drive to hills and poss ride them, or not.

    Team Dinner Thurs night

Swim Friday AM - I'll find where you all are. I am sure it will be easy.

Steve - amazing that you are considering doing the race after your accident. I plan to go 14-15 hours (it's my first) so stick with me baby!

And the famous Al Truscott - we are practically neighbours now, and I am v much looking fwd to meeting you!

Taper going well. v antsy and trying a) not to get injured and b) not to get sick.

    See y'all in 5 days.

    Jane
