Hope everyones weekend went well, and the RR's were good and inspiring!  Its been a long year/season for many of us so battling mental fatigue is a reality at this point. What do you do to keep the fires burning? Dont hesitate to reach out if you need a boost or suggestions.

If you want to post or read about RR#1 check out this thread: How did your RR go?

I'll report on workouts later.

  • Oh Rian! Mental fatigue is not my problem-its injuries! Now, I'm down again! At least I got my RR done the weekend before. Last Monday I tripped going up a weird stairwell to my dentist's second floor office-hit my right shin really hard. It hurt but did my bike trainer the next day fine. Then Wednesday I did my long run and it hurt the second half of run. But, I didn't listen to my body-now I am fighting a really painful anterior tiabialis tendonitis (my self diagnosis.) @$##//!!! Thursday was a day off due to work then Friday I did a 3800 swim-all kicking with left leg only-right hurt. Then bike trainer all weekend at about 65%-found if I kept my toe pointed down, not contracting the tendon, it didn't hurt (not effective pedal stroke tho). Trying to get seen today and an XR and prognosis. Can't run until it doesn't hurt. And, my husband and I are flying to Kona tomorrow to volunteer-he is a dive instructor and works for the dive shop that sets up the water course, so we are with that crew. I had my runs planned on Alii Drive and my tribike rented to ride the Queen K-not sure if I can do anything now (except sun on the beach.)
  • @Betsy- sorry you have pain. Take the time now to get it cared for. Hope no fracture.

Did OWS yesterday with friends. Water temp 67, air temp 52. We have fun and it is perfect since I am not stressing my shoulder doing intervals. Then we hot tub to warm up, can't beat it. But next Friday will be a challenge. I might break out the heated shirt.

Today's run was uneventful. The toe I had surgery on years ago (hence I have arthritis in the main joint of my big toe) bothers me if I do any uphill running. Sadly I live at the top of a series of hills, so I have to be easy going home. But I can do the intervals flat without issue.

Tomorrow I will hit the pool as OWS is "closed" this week (friend is out of town on business).

Just under 6 weeks to go.
  • @Michele, what's your OWS plan for the weekend? Sun before riding? Are we finally going to be able to ride together both days this weekend?!?!!?!!
  • Mentally fine.     Fatigue catching up.    Going to take this week easier even than last week.   then plan on strong two weeks until the three week taper.

  •  #2297!!!

Ack Betsy! What a challenge you've had this summer. So we have no gardening, and now no stairs. We're gonna put you in a padded room for the next 6 weeks!  Hang in there Lady. Better to get that leg better than push it. Enjoy Kona!!!!! My heart aches everytime I think about Hawaii.

    @Robin Great!

The Mon/Tues back to back swim days kill me. I always have a strong swim Mon, then a terrible swim Tues. Barely made it through yesterdays swim and could only hold a pace like it was a year ago. I think im going to switch up tues and wed workouts so I get a day in between swims.  Storm coming in with big temp drop this week, so I think no more OWS here in Flagstaff.

    Trainer ride today @ lunch.

  • @Ryan, I think it's hard to swim back to back too, but I think it has a purpose in building fatigue too? I think we are stronger for it. That is just my instinct though...

I'm having a hard time finishing up my swims in time to get back and ready for work. Making me work extra hard to get it in. Keeps me true!

Week is going well so far. Have great weekend plans to ride with teammates for the 4hr & 3.5 hr rides. Hoping the weather holds out and no issues arise. But, must get through the week first, and that means long run tomorrow. Eek! image
  • Well, my schedule has been a jumble. Yesterday the RR from Saturday and rode 75 miles (getting dark) and then ran 6.2. Run felt great but the bike...gives new meaning to pain in the A$$. Back, neck and shoulders do not like aero, I know what my challenge is going to be for race day, especially with no reason to "get" to sit up on the ride! How does everyone get ready fo the body parts to stop screaming?
  •  Thanks all for your sympathy-I do need a padded box for the next 6 weeks.  Thankfully pain is gone, XR was negative monday.  I can swim and bike without pain.  Going to give running another week off then start back in (I am actually scared to run-afraid to hurt myself like last week.)

Got to swim in the Kona aquatic center today, next to a pro, then rode 1.5 hrs on the Queen K this afternoon-missed the EN group that left in the morning to the road to Hawi.  Tomorrow will do OWS-they have a coffee bar somewhere that you swim to and drink while treading water.  Then plan saturday's 4 hour ride on the queen K.  Will repeat it all friday, hopefully after finding the EN group at breakfast,  then volunteer saturday and go diving sunday before returning home Monday.

@Michelle-no worries about your toe- the run around tempe town lake is pretty flat!

@ Ryan-agree the swims two days in a row are to adjust to fatigue.  I'm told thats a feeling to beat after the turn around

  • Off to do the 135' run! Back in a fewimage

  • Got my 150' run in early this AM ~ 17mi. Needed a headlamp for the first hour. Man does my new nutrition regieme make long runs soooooo much better! Felt fresh and strong the whole run. Of course I still wanted to climb under my desk a few hours later and nap!

Okay so consensus is I should quit whining about Tues swim, suck it up and expect it to be tough to get through....#sigh# will do!

No OWS tomorrow -- first fall storm blowing in, maybe 1st snow! , so back to the pool -- 3500yds in a 25er makes me feel like a hamster on the wheel! And since I'm solo parenting this weekend I'll be doing both rides on the trainer too, so its all about mental training this weekend.

    Be safe!

  • @Rian I'll be hitting up the trainer this weekend as well, let's push through this thing!!! Nice work on the run! Only one more 150' run left!
  • Busy week. Sorry I didn't get to answer Dottie, but we are hooked up to ride together tomorrow in the freezing NE.

Pool swim Tuesday was good. Pace is improving without shoulder pain being any trouble until late in swim. But hamster on a wheel is an accurate description.

Thursday run was uneventful. 150' of zoning out as much as possible. Head lamp needed for 1st half.

Today was a COLD swim. 63.2 degrees water, air 44. I did use the heated shirt but it did not seem to help. I need to fix the hole in my wetsuit and wear the Neoprene cap.

Tomorrow will be a cold ride. Sunday will be another cold OWS. I will let you know. I will likely stop OWS at 60 degrees.
  • Way to go folks.

    Feeling better here.

Ease back into weekend thing.  3 hours bike saturday.     10 mile run sunday.      Then hopefully back to the full schedule these last two full weeks.

  • Way to stand down Robin. It was important. And welcome back!
  •  Whew! Done. 6hrs,120miles on the trainer in 2 days. It took 6 episodes of Walking Dead, Live coverage of Kona, and Pandora to get it done. I dont know how Robin does a 5hr ride straight through.

Pool swim on Friday was awesome. I'd been having doubts about my swim strength lately, but 7x400 @ Race Pace -3 went really well and still had some left for Rich's favorite 100 repeats 50sprint/50recovery.

Hope everyones weekend was fruitful and safe!

    Now onto chores....

  • Totally screwed the weekend rides.

Planned to ride with Dottie, but it was literally freezing when we were to head out. Decided to hit the drainer. Usually I drink too much and have to pee a lot. The 59' of FTP intervals totally threw off my nutrition and hydration. I thought I was doing well, but did think it odd that I never had to pee. At the 3:25 mark, I officially became extremely weak. Held on for another 5', then a 10' easy spin down. Figured I had bonked, but then could not get off the couch and my legs hurt. I did start peeing, but in retrospect it could not have been enough.

Since the heated shirt is broken- I decided to hit the pool. Did 6x500 with minor shoulder pain. Pace is still a bit slow for me, but I am thrilled to pretty much do the distance. Figured the legs were back, but tendinitis of the foot was hurting with every wall push off. Decided to skip the 20' run and just do ABP ride.

Got on the bike and was convinced that the PM was broken. I could not get the numbers up. When I looked at my gearing, I could see that I was struggling even in the easy gears. I was finally able to grind out just under an hour at about IF 0.67. Pathetic. I decided to call it and focus on recovery.

I am mad at myself for getting so far behind yesterday and screwing it all up. Thank goodness this is the start of an easy week.

Hope you all had a better weekend of riding.
  • @rian, oh my god 6 hours on the trainer in 2 days.. I'd say your certainly mentally ready.. My head hurts thinking about doing that.
  • Hey guys, my week ended with a Fri-Sun off. Took a ladies retreat weekend to Louisiana with a friend. MUCH needed mental and physical time off. Had a great run on Thursday. Negative split. Overachieved for the entire hour and a half after the first hour at MP vs. LRP but figured it was okay since I was taking the weekend off. It was good mental training to hold a pace that was uncomfortable like it is after 18 in the IM. I used gels and water and had no issues so I think that is what I will continue to do. I'll love running without that dang fuel belt in the race! Looking forward to an easy week ahead.

@Michele - I know I don't have to tell you this but just acknowledge and move on regarding your boogered bike. This is why we practice. You know what to do next time ;-)
  • Michele: x2 what Amy said.

Amy: Nice run! And good job on the Girls Getaway (thats what my wife calls em) I'm a big believer in Head Time.

Todd: Ha! My head still hurts thinking about it! And I did wuss out on the last hour on Sunday. I had yard work to get to.... image
