Rece selection prior to Lake Placid IM

New to this forum and am planning  IM in Lake Placid.  So far that is the only event on my horizon.  However, as I create my season plan I would like to include a few other events in preparation for Placid.  Any suggestions?  I am sure this has been discussed before, but not sure where to look.  Thanks.  Gary

  • Hi Gary,

Rev3 Quassy is the right amount of time out from IMLP to do a HIM, plus it's a TeamEN Race Focus Event (Lots of EN Peeps there). Quassy is also a course that benefits from EN execution.

Eagleman is in a similar timeframe, but not an EN Focused event. It is hot, flat & fast.

Keep in mind that with EN it is not necessary to do a race before an IM - it's not in the schedule, but you might want to do one to mach sure all of the parts are moving smoothly.

Let us know what you decide.
  •   Thanks for the info.  I was considering the Patriot HIM  June 15th.  Anybody think its too close in time to Placid?

  • Hey Gary! Evan Odim asked this same question regarding Patriot a while back and Coach P's response was: "Yes, you can do it...see the wiki for how to insert a HIM into your plan....in Self Coaching Guide... " Mark Walter of Sun Multisport advertises Patriot as a great tune-up for Placid. If you haven't done Patriot before, it's fantastic. Unbelievably well-run, beautiful course, out of this world support, and great swag. And I can't begin to say enough for Mark Walter... he's SUCH a great guy.

Patriot falls 6 weeks before IMLP, so it'll be the weekend of Race Rehearsal #1. That might be a consideration if you've never done Ironman before - you *might* be better served by doing the RR and practicing your race day pacing.  Quassy is probably a better option in that case as it's 2 weeks before RR#1. Quassy is hilly (not that I've done it, but people seem to LOVE to tell me that when I tell them I'm doing it! My response is always, "Great! I LOVE hills!" ;-)  If this isn't your first IM, however, you can play around with it a little, and IMO, Patriot is a great choice.

IF you decide to do Patriot, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE consider registering on Veterans' Day, November 11th. Mark Walter is donating $25 of every registration fee received on Veterans' Day to John's and my charity, ReserveAid (shameless plug... www.reserveaid.org). Thanks!!!

  • Yes, you can do patriot, we'll just have to juggle some race rehearsal stuff, but it's possible. Not as hilly/challenging as Rev3 Quassy or Placid but a good use of your time. If you do Patriot, it falls just after (?) the 2013 placid training rally...just a note.
  • Patrick. Thanks foR the follow up. Is it okay to do both the training rally and the patriot him? Thanks. Gary
  • Did the training rally and the Patriot Aquabike 2 years ago, no problem. Need to ensure that all other stresses are low at that time (ie. no work travel, newborn in the house, hosting a rave at the local club, that sort of thing) and you can probably pull it off. Don't want to dig yourself too deep just 6 weeks out from LP.
  • I am doing Lake Placid as well, and considered the Patriot since a bunch of friends in my local triathlon club are doing it. Reading the wiki, I figured it was a non-starter though - just too close to Placid. Now I am rethinking it. I know Quassy is a team race, but I've done it the last two years and would really like to try something different (I am not really built for those hills!). So if Coach P and other says it is doable, I think I am in. I will do the Lake Placid training camp as well.
  • I need to check the dates on everything, but when I did the Lake Placid camp in 2011, that was the first race rehearsal.
  • I'm a newbie and still figuring out where everything is around here. I definitely want to get back east for a training weekend on the course in LP. When is the training camp scheduled for 2013 and where is that info normally posted?
    Thanks,
    Joe
  • Hi Joe - here is the link to the 2013 Master Season Plan: http://tinyurl.com/83nu5za The dates for the IMLP camp are listed as June 7th-9th.
  • Coach P - since they moved LP one week later (7/28) - will we move EN LP camp one week later as well - and then there would be a conflict between EN camp & Patriot?
  • After mulling it over, I decided to go back to Quassy. It's a team event, I like the timing better, and I need to redeem myself on those hills after a disappointing race there this year. Plus they have Heed on the course at Patriot. Blah. And the hills at Quassy make Placid seem easy. image
  • @Jess thanks! Ughh! I've got a wedding down in Baltimore the prior weekend. I hope I can make this work with my schedule.
