Week 3: Get it Done!

Ok now we are into it! Let's get it done this week, folks! I started the Get Fast Plan. I am going to do a short core set after every workout this week, hopefully 5 sessions total. I know Steve will be watching

  • Yes I will, looks like I have to step up to the plate this week.!!

  • Today is Monday, my weekend day off(worked weekend). So I will sit down this morning and figure out week 3 agenda, post it soon!
  • Alright - this week's goals: stick to the schedule. I find it intersting that I can stick to a 'normal' triathlete schedule of swim/bike/run but for the life of me can't stick to doing these Core workouts.

So.... here's to sticking with the plan all week! Today involved a short Core workout after doing a group fitness class at the Y this AM. Wednesday and Friday are up next!
  • Your post made me feel better Greg- I was starting to feel like a failure as an athlete in general- without the deadline of a race I could not stick to another plan!! I did up a workout schedule for a friend this weekend, and it occured to me that the same pricipals I was putting into her plan I could use for myself. It's not rocket science, I just need to DO IT!! One thing I have noticed doing these core workouts is that I am a lot more aware of my posture, and keeping my core engaged, that stuff can't hurt for sure.

    Mon- Ab Ripper/Swimming
    Tues- Core Synergistics/Bike
    Wed- Stretching/Swimming
    Thurs- Yoga/Bike
    Fri- Ab Ripper/Swimming
    Saturday- TRX Core Workout/Bike
    Sunday- Stretching

  • OK, still sticking to the P90X as my framework with some slight modifications. Targeting what is important to me rehab and stretch!

    So Today(Mon) - Ab rip x, x stretch, Chest & back ab rip x - Done

    Tues - Yoga x

Wed - Shoulders arms ab rip x

Thurs - Ab rip x, X STRETCH( lower body and core ) back to ab rip x

Fri - Chest shoulder tricep ab rip

Sat - ab rip x, Back biceps, ab rip x

    Sun - Core Syn

As you can see there is no Tri workouts involved, using this down time to see how this affects my OS trg start. Hopefully in a positive swing. Will start a return to running last week of Oct due to Brenda and I going down to Philly for the marathon. Brenda the full me the half!

  • Oh Greg, I hear you! Why won't I just do it? Lol. Great job and go get it tomorrow too!

  •  Becky, I love that you do so much stretching! So good for us, good role model, girl!

  • I love streching, I feel so much better after, I really notice it affects my posture. Getting in a 45 minute session devoted to just stretching is devine... wish I still had a good yoga class to attend as I enjoy that as well. Lots of good mental training involved in yoga, aside from the physical benefits!

Went to the pool yesterday was swimming with a fellow swim coach, we decided to do some dolphin kick sets- and I could actually feel how much my dolphin kick has improved in just a few weeks of some core work- so excited to see a benefit already!!
  • Continuing with Asylum this week...
    Yesterday - Back to Core
Today - Vertical Plyo (super ouch - single leg power jumps are hard!)
    Wednesday - Relief (stretching)
Thursday - Game Day (don't think this will be "all fun and games")
    Friday - Back to Core
    Saturday - Strength
Sunday - Midwest Super Spartan Race (that counts as core, right?)
Started running again this week after 2 weeks off post-marathon. Sunday should be interesting....
  •  Becky that is so awesome abou the dolphin kick and illustrates for me exactly why I know I need to strengthen my core. Was reading Coach P's race report and he talked about aero position. When I gotc fitted, I couldn't ride as aggressively as I should because of my core. Goal is to get down where I should be. Keep up the awesome work!

  •  Dave asylum describes it lol! Tell us more about this race! Be kind to yourself in your marathon recovery period

  • Interesting about the bike fit. I am hoping to revisit mine this spring, hopefull with some of the changes I am making to my workout routine a slightly lower fit will be acheivable. Now THAT's a triathlete's goal to having a strong core- being able to handle a better aero position!! Post that one on your mirror!!
  • That is my end goal, improved core improve flexibilty improved aero position!
  • It hurts me to sneeze... so I must be doing something right. The entire family is coming down with some nasty virus.... hoping I don't catch it because I'm finally feeling the workout mojo, would not be good to have to start over again. Goin to look into these Asylum videos, would be nice to have another option to throw on the playbook for my lunch hour workouts. Jealous of all the peeps starting up the OS next week, patiently waiting for the bike focus plans to come out since there is still no running in my immediate future!! I'm gonna start up a bike focus plan thread so I can feel the team love too. Hope everyone's week 3- or even week one of the Core Challenge is going well for everyone!!
  •  Attempted the game day workout this morning.  I lost.  But I was dripping afterwards.  Just when I was starting to figure out some of the moves in the other workouts, the schedule throws in a new one with more different moves leaving me feeling slow.  Need a good dose of HTFU and do better next time!

Spartan race is a mud run/obstacle course, kinda like Tough Mudder or Warrior Dash, if you're familiar with those.  Spartan is more of a race, I hear, than TM, which is more about teamwork.  I'm looking at it more as a "fun run" rather than trying to race hard.  Going to be cold so I'm hoping for not too much water!

Crazy to think that I got to run outside at lunch yesterday and it was 75ish but come Sunday (race day) it will be 40!

Maybe "core workout" wouldn't sound quite so bad if we renamed it "aero position workout"?  Just a thought.

  •  Great job, though Dave! Keep at it and you will get it done! That race sounds fun, except the cold part. Here in NH having similar weather and getting ready for hurricane Sandy next week. Should I rename the group Improved aero position challenge? Lol I love that!

  • The name change might bring more folks in, that's for sure! Tie it into a specific improvement- like promising if you buy X for your bike you will be faster- would also work for joining a core challenge I'm sure. It's all in the marketing :-)

Having a lazy day today... slept in this morning, think I may just go home and get some stuff done around the house at lunch instead of going to the pool, I'll take the kids tonight and go jump off the diving board and do fun stuff. Reading Chrissie Wellington's blog post about the off season reminded me to stop and enjoy the roses a little too, and today I need to do that! As long as I don't get stuck in the habit :-)
