Mandatory Reading for all AmZof'ers

We're getting closer to race day and I know these have been passed around before, but if you have not done this race before, you MUST read them before coming to AmZof.  They are written by my good friend Robbie Goffin.  They are not so much "Race Reports" per se, but more of a "Short Story" about the event and the struggles of his day.  Robbie was a Princeton educated Literature major who recently (about 9 months ago) quit his Wall Street job to pack all of his belongings into a pick-up truck with his wife and 2 kinds and simply travel around North and South America living off the land (all 4 of them sleeping in a small tent every night) as he write's a couple books and keeps a blog of their adventures.  Even if you have done this event before or have read them before, re-reading is a great way to get excited for the adventures we are about to partake.  And if you've not read them yet, read the older one first as they sort of build on each other...

I'd sa they should also read a post from back in 2010 "Race Day Wardrobe and Etiquette" - http://members.endurancenation.us/Forums/tabid/57/aft/1970/Default.aspx where Chris G replies with some photos that give the flavor of the race.

I read the 2013 story...sounds brutal - not any fun at all. I'll be racing the USAT "Long Course Duathlon" Nationals on May 17th, but it's only 5-32-5, basically the AmZof Short Course without the big hills. I'm thinking about taking a slot to Powerman Zofingen in Sep but really, AmZof with the bad weather and crappy course conditions sounds worse.

I'd do this again if it weren't so dang far away - minimum 4 days knocked out of IM CDA training.

@ Paul - there are no hills in Am Zof, only chutes and ladders.

Ok, I've decided that AmZof is not in the cards for me in 2014, if anyone from EN is looking to do the race (I'm registered for short course), let me know and I can contact the RD to see about a transfer.

Race website says Hammer HEED and Hammer Gels to be provided at aid stations. Can this race be trusted to have enough on-course nutrition or do I need to lug my own around the course?

I'm carrying my own nutrition. 2 yrs ago they ran out of water at the 1 aid station up in the woods on the run during my last run leg. These aren't "Ironman" style aid stations either. Usually manned by 2-3 kids at a folding table on the bike and maybe 1 or 2 people at the folding table in the woods that you pass 2 different times (from different directions) on the run. The gazebo you run through during every transition is always fully stocked and the real Canadiens always take a shot of Jameson before their last run loop. Just sayin'...

I thought that the real Canadiens took the shot EACH time through the gazebo

We really need to get the vibe up and EN participation up at this event next year.

this was an epic race for me, I did put too much out in the first run, but held on. My worst run was faster than my best run from 2 years ago. I dropped from a 7:35 to a 6:10 on the middle distance race (RBRBR). Looking forward to coming back faster, lighter and stupider next year. I might even get my arm twisted to go LC...

here are some good media i have found out there
