At present I am recovering from L4-5 bulge. Much better. Want to compete in international distances and maybe a half IM but do not want to be hurt prior to Canada.
As for Canada, I would love to do a 12.5-13 hour !

I really have no goals for the race at this point. I am seeing so much improvement in the OS that I am just waiting until we get close to put a time out there which of course will depend on race day conditions. Where is realistic I think 12-13 hours right now is a possibility.
I have one previous IM in Lake Placid in 2004 16:09, LSD bad pacing and overuse running injury. This should make a PB relatively easy.
Right now I am just looking forward to getting outside for some bike rides in a few weeks.

This will be my 3rd Ironman Canada and looking to crush previous finishes in 2006 and 2007. Both years I was working CRAZY hours and trying to squeeze in training as an after-thought - not this year baby.
Joined Team EN to maximize "time efficiency"
Have done multiple marathons, olympic / half irons, adventure races, podiumed 3 times in Olympic Relay Tri's as the bike guy.
Looking forward to seeing how the TeamEN OutSeason training plan has set me up for Spring. My Lab tests indicate my fitness is currently where I was in July for my previous training season's so I'm confident I'm a ahead of schedule and have a lot more fitness to gain
Barry Plaga doing IM Canada in 2010. I live in the Pasadena area, a stone's throw from the Rose Bowl. This will be my 5th IM after a year lay off due to knee surgery. Strauss kicked me in the knee in early 2009 when I was trouncing him up the backside of GMR. He then tried to throw my bike into a ravine, but our wheelbuilder buddy stopped him. Doing Oceanside 70.3 in 3 weeks to kick off the IM training program.
Goal is to significantly improve fitness and learn race execution, so that nutrition problems and GI distress will not take me down in yet another IM. This should lead me to a personal best by 45 - 60 minutes (because I will be running instead of shuffling), more would be even better.
IMCA is my 3rd, completed IM Wisconsin in 2008 and IM Lake Placid in 2009 slowly and painfully...although not as painfully as the Rev 3 HIM in CT last year. I may end up doing Rev 3 again in my preparation for IMCA against my better judgment.
What I am most looking forward to right now is some warmer weather and end to the snowstorms in the NE.
Off season I have been working on bike strength doing all 3 of the King of the Mountain rides which are century rides here in So Cal in the Mountains each with over 10,000 Ft of climbing. I did IM Coz last year at 15:01 and felt good at the finish. By following the EN race execution plan was key for me as I felt good all day and know Nutrition issues so I think I need to just continue to work on Bike Strength and Run Speed.

This will be my first IM. Done 3 1/2 IM, 3 marathons. 8 1/2 marathons
Goal is to finish strong. stay married, employed, and not spend 3 hrs in the med tent with an IV in my arm.
Best splits for the 1/2 IMs were 34 min swim. 3:06 Bike, 1:47 Run.

Goals? Too early to set a specific time goal (although that will certainly come!). High level goals are the usual - have fun training, finish the race, all the while maintaining something approximating a life/family/work/training balance.
I anointed myself as the EN poster boy of how NOT to race an Ironman at IMC last year. 55 minute swim, 5:27 bike, 5:12 sufferfest/death march. I think if I had ridden even 5:35-5:37 the run would have been much, much different!
So IMC 2010 is about unfinished business. #1 goal this year--show restraint on the bike and run the entire marathon!
This will be my 22nd IM and 6th in Canada and third this year.I'm 56 and live in UK.We have friends from UK who live in Penticton.I'll be with my wife Dot(cheering person according to the Japanese).Goal for race is to get everything right for once on a course that suits me fine.Best time was 11.27 but I left T2 with 4.20 to do the marathon and get under 11 hrs which is my goal --on that occasion about 2 miles from the run start I looked for my salt tablets and they had fallen out of my elasticated belt--I sweat like hell and need salt--result bad bad cramps at mile 13 ish and had to walk 6 miles until I recovered.Finished strong but missed Kona slot by 10 minutes !!!!
Anyway a beautiful place for a race and don't worry about the two big hills --they aren't even steep--just grind them out and think of the 10 miles or so to coast down to the finish--and the race support is the best I've come across --where else do you get 5000 of the blue rinse brigade bossing you around an looking after you--my advice is don't even think of arguing with them !!

Hi everyone. My name is Tim Gagne, I am in my 51st year on this earth and reside in beautiful British Columbia Canada, home of IMC. 2010 will be my 4th IMC (04, 07,08). My goal for this year is to break 4hrs on the run. That is 36min off of my 2008 IMC time. I know it is in me just need to stay healthy thru June and July. I don't train with power on the bike and have switched to running with pace the last 30 days as I believe this is the key to my 3:59 run. My challenge at this time is addressing the overwhelming info on EN site and actually starting to engage. Then again, I guess I just did.

There's lots of information here, which can lead to overload. There are lots of people around here to help and point you in the right direction. Do a search, but also feel free to post in the forum if you are having trouble finding something or interperting information.

I'll be up in Penticton this weekend for the long weekend doing a "mini-big bike weekend" in prep for the Oliver half iron next next weekend on June7th.

but wonder how to incporate into hill workouts. I acknowldge that in z4-5 whether on hills or flats the only diff is speed. That said, one must train the body to be strong
in the position we will be climbing in for quite some time. So I have been thinking do one week's sets on flats/rolling and another weeks on hill repeats.
Anyone have any thoughts?

I can see why riding hills would be a problem. I'm not sure I would do hill repeats but I just take what I can get. There's not many hills where I am and an 11K ride up Richter is not doable where I am. I can get in 1.5-1.6K at best with more grade.
For me the hills are about riding at a steady power level and not surging. if you are training with HR then I thing doing hill would be even more valuable as you don't get the instant feedback as the power riders. How does your HR move up, are you going to hard early on a long climb. You will just have more data to reference than the two race rehersals.

Hey Gordon, thanks for your thoughts.
Lucky for me I live on an island which means it is difficult to do 5k without a hill. I also have a mountain pass that is almost identical to richter and yellow on the way back. so that route lends itself perfectly for 4 hour rides. The difficulty is getting the meat of the workout done, not on those climbs, or maybe I should. Like, hit the climb hard for the 10-12-16min set with easy spinning. That is why I thought of hill repeats on wed ride then on sat/sun I can do the steady climbs and get my threshold sets in when it flattens.
I tend to manage my effort on the primary climbs as HR combined with cadence. If my HR surges or cadence drops below 70rpm I back off.

- my 'Plan B race' to try to earn a Kona spot in case I fail to qualify at IM Regensburg a few weeks before.
- IM #12 (assuming I finish #11, which is never a given).
(... and all of this is assuming I get a IMC spot at a qualifier in July!)

Eric Blakie from UK--way up North near Newcastle--this will be my 21 st Ironman and 6th at Canada--looking to do a PB--the course is super and the Iron Crew support the best ! Did IM Lanzarote in May as a social race !-- but main race was IM Japan only 3 weeks after--Rich told me to walk marathon in Lanzarote --I did but not intentionally --tore calf muscle 200 meters into run and walked whole way -pity after a super swim/bike --oh and then Japan was cancelled due to Foot and Motuh disease in Japan--so a kind of enforced very long training period --I really look forward to the race!
