General Prep - Season Plan

 Hi All,

I just got all panicky today when I realized I was 20 weeks out and still have two weeks to go in the OS. I switched my plan and started freaking out a little before I sat down with the season planning tool and saw it was only a 12 week race prep.

I'm finishing up the Nov OS followed by a two week transition.

What are you folks doing for the four weeks of general prep? (purple time)

I'm planning on just repeating the last four weeks of the OS with the first four weeks of the OS Swim hack.

Any other ideas? I started looking for a good race to keep me busy.

  • Hi Greg,

I'm in Dec OS, so i'm not on the same schedule as you. But I do know that you can switch your plan to TP2.0 General Prep when the time comes. Of course you could post to the macro thread and ask the coaches as well.
  • I too am in the Nov. OS and was planning on doing the 20 week IM plan which (I think) would have started this past Monday. I just went in and changed my plan to the 20 week IM plan, but it would only let me start it for next week.  So, now the plan will be a week behind.  I am sure I can look a  week ahead to stay on track, but is there a way to change it, so the plan and weeks coincide?

  • Hi, Greg, I know I'm a little behind here, but I'm doing the same thing. Can someone explain to me the difference between choosing the 12 and 20 week IM plan? I was of the understanding that it was changed to a 20 wk OS and 12 wk race prep.

Ah! Doesn't this last week of OS feel good?! Especially with sunny weather here in upstate NY...finally in the 50's and able to get outside!

    Cheryl -

It should just be a function of the end date you pick; so make sure you have picked the right Sunday to End on...

The 20 week plan has the Gen prep 1 and 2 built right in, it's one click and done. The 12 week plan is just race prep phase, and then you can use the 4wk gen prep blocks as needed...

  • I put in the 20 week plan which says that this is Week 3.  Is that where everyone else is?

  • Dave - Basically, yes, everyone is on the same page-ish area...and the closer you get to 12 weeks out, the more likely they'll be there...

  • I didn't mean to start a thread and then drop out. I expected an e-mail when there was a reply but must have forgotten to subscribe. So, I figure no one responded.

I can't remember if I saw General Prep as an option when I posted or I just didn't know what it was but understanding GP1+GP2+RP12 = RP20 is very helpful. Seems like your advice to post to the Macro Forum was sound, there have been a few with similar questions since then and helped me shape my options.

After the 20 Week Nov OS
I'm leaning toward a 2 Weeks of Transition. (I ran a mary in January and figure the rest would do more good than harm.)
Here's where I'm still a little torn. The options seem to be
    1. Repeat OS 17-20 or 16-20 with 1 week transition. (The advantage I see with doing this is to keep building speed.)
    2. Do 4 weeks of GP1 + 12 week RP.
    3. Do 4 weeks of GP2 + 12 week RP which is roughly the same as jumping into the 20 week at week 5.

I'm going to cross post in the macro thread for thoughts on when and why to do each of the three options.

  • I just completed week 20 of December OS & need guidance with "General Prep".  I'm doing IMUSA in late July & have 4 weeks of GP before beginning my 12-week Race Prep.  Are the workouts similar to OS?  Do I begin swimming now?  How much/many of each discipline does one do in GP?

    Thanks

  • Hey Terry, I ended up getting my feedback in the macro thread.
There are quite a few questions and responses posted there. You may actually find someone in the same situation.

I'd suspect you might want to consider a week or two transition after the OS. I did November and went into GP 2. Last week looked like this for me. I think it was roughly week 6 which was not much different than week 5. M= 60 min swim, Tu= 60 min run+60 min swim, W=75 min run, 30 min run, Th=90 min run, F=60 min swim, Sa=210 min bike+30 min run, Su=180 min bike. Don't quote me this. I did feel the bump in volume in my legs week 5. I faded toward the end of one or two workouts in week 5 but week 6 went well. I hit the pool toward the end of the OS doing the position and propulsion progressions but the swimming seems to be coming back around.
