Pass Dan's Inspection or carry enough Water?

I just spent 3 days back to back of med-long distance riding and I've realized that the banging of the water bottle on the top tube is really freaking annoying!!!    Smooth roads I'm fine, but bumpy roads and that klank klank klank drives me nuts!  My solution to that problem is using a short water bottle (one of those smaller Gatorade size ones you get at the Gatorade swim dealio at IMs).

Here is the problem.  I can only fit one bottle on the frame (the frame is just too small for 2 bottles).  I usually resolve this by putting a rear mount aqua-rack hydration dealio off the seat tube to carry 2 more bottles.  However, I know this is soooooooo not going to pass Dan's bike inspection- it just screams triathlete.

So my question is this:  How much water should we plan to carry with us on the bike between opportunities to refill?   Oh- and yeah, I know there are back pockets in my jersey but I plan on having those well stuffed with arm warmers, wind vest, cameras, etc!

  • Nemo,

First of all, all this talk about the code is a bunch of talk.  Don't worry.  You know how Rich talks about wearing non tri/race clothes out to dinner, in public when not on the bike etc.?  Well, he was the first to break that code last year while sporting a cycling skull cap while walking through downtown San Jose last year.  The code will be broken many times over the course of a week.

Put the rear mount on.  Staying hydrated is much more important.  The van is always there for refills at key points of the ride.

  • We will give a you Dorky Bike Set Up Waiver for the tour, under the Lil Peep exeption clause. However, at tech inspection you must be, in fact, shorter than Mickey's hand...

Have been trying to be tall enough to ride the E ticket rides for a looooooooong time!!!   Thanks!

  • Whew! Good to know...my bike frame is too small for a water bottle cage on the down tube and the seat tube too. Rear mount it is. We can put a bottle of wine in one of the rear cages, Nemo, as we are riding through Sonoma, right?

Ahhhh, now things are starting to look much brighter!!!

  • The code is just talk and not very serious at all. However we do have A LOT of fun with it especially when it's Rich or Patrick breaking the code.

  • And to think I put white tape on my bars just to pass inspection.... image

  • And if the temps fall below 50, Dan's going to be sniffing knees.
  • Oh no Dan, you gave these unruly kids an opening! It's all over! You're going to have to go around all, "Um, I'm not with them" for the entire week. I would. I recommend giant sunglasses and a hat.

  • Nice work, Dan. Now we are going to have road bikes with bento boxes rear cages, neon green riding vests and wool socks....ugg...

  • Whatever you guys do, make sure your bike looks like you left it in a bog for three years, then put that in a bike box with your dirty laundry, some compost, and then super glue it shut and send it to rich to assemble.

    Rich =

    Dan + P =

  • OK- I'd just like to offer a little proof that I'm not a total Fred!  Follow this link and choose "Roll 11".  You are searching for image "Roll_10_day_2-img_1326"  which should be towards the end of the images you are provided (don't ask me why it says Roll 10 on the image name when it should say Roll 11- and don't ask me what page because it seems the page the image shows up on changes depending on your monitor settings).

This photo company did not make it easy for folks to find their pics, but thankfully I remembered we were on Roll 11 (they had a sign ahead of the camera dude) and my crew was easy to spot because we were one of the few gangs NOT clad in bright yellow vests!

Anyway, "Roll_10_day_2-img_1326" is the first of about 5 or 6 images of me with my crew at the CNC ride this past weekend.  Other than the obvious hamming it up for the camera you'll note that I DO know how to ride in a paceline and I DO know how to disguise myself as a roadie!  Granted, my helmet doesn't match my kit, my shoes are Tri shoes, and my shorts are a bit too short (although they ARE cycling shorts).  Otherwise I think I did alright

  • I was only giving Nemo a pass for water bottles. Everything else will be under scrutiny for potential ridicule by the style police.

  • At the inaugural TourdeCali for Campers, Rich handed me my bike down from the big truck (driven by some Teamster from Michigan on the roads where it would actually fit) and I thanked him for assembling it with love in his heart. I then asked him if he had seen a rear bottle cage I had thrown in a bag just in case the sag wagon logistics weren't completely sorted and I needed a way to carry a bunch of water. He handed it to me and with an air of disgust he said, "Yeah, here it is. No way I was putting that thing on the bike."

  • Another "pass inspection" question for y'all...

I have a pair of EN Cycling bibs that I was planning on bringing to ride in (planning on using bibs the whole time).
Well, I don't have an XL cycling jersey for my fat arse to match the bibs. There aren't any left in the 'store'.

    Is it:
    1) acceptable to have non-matching jersey and bottoms/bibs?
    2) okay to borrow (at least for the ToC) someone else's XL cycling jersey so I can match?
  • Borrow a Jersey!!!!!! :-)

    Borrow a Jersey!!!!!! :-)

    Leave it to Nemo!

Who has one I can borrow?

  • Not matching is totally fine however it has to be really wack. Sorta of matching is worse - look like you mean it.

  • I don't understand why Nemo is even remotely worried about how to carry her own water. If R & P had any sort of true domestique capabilities, they'd stuff their jersey pockets AND jersey itself completely full of bottles that they would carry FOR her. I don't see any reason why Nemo and Kitbo aren't declared "protected riders" today and treated as such from this point forward. GC contenders don't carry their own water...period!

Bill, remind me to give you a BIG kiss the next time I see you!!! [insert EN 3.0 girl smiley giving boy smiley a kiss and bashfully backing away]

Like this jersey with EN shorts?

  • I've got a cookie monster jersey. Will that go okay with EN bibs?
  • Just remember, anything goes with these

    (Caution, NSFW link!)

  • @Beth, yep - that would rule.
    @Scott, seriously?
    @mike....no
  • @Dan, oh yeah I do. A gift from my mom. It's kinda big on me now, but when I first got it several years ago it fit right. Guess that's a good sign that all the s/b/r stuff works wonders?!?
That's the only goofy jersey I have though...I think...I'd have to check to be sure.
  • All the pressure!!!!!
  • Dan we did a bike race on saturday (don't worry didn't win LOL) and saw what I think is the best example of the code in action. Sorry for action shot I didn't want to break the code by letting the guy know I was photo'ing his bike LOL The one on the car is the example although with the white seat the other guy is trying!

  • not sure about the white rims. I'm going to have consult the rule book.
