IMFL 2017 Thread

Is there one of these out there?  I could not find it with a search.  Is anyone else doing Florida and would you like to share training stories?

Comments

  • I'm not doing Florida but I like how you are planning those Disney events out to Dec 2018!!
  • I've just signed up for it.  I've done a bunch of IMs but this is my first at this course.
  • Hooray!  I was starting to think I was going solo.  This will be my third IMFL.  Hope we can stay in touch to discuss training and I am happy to answer any questions you have about the course.
  • I will be doing IMFL.  This will also be my third in Florida.

  • I will also be doing IMFL. This will be my fifth in Florida. Looking forward to meeting everyone!
  • For us IMFL first timers, I'd love to know a little more about the course.  Has it always been wetsuit legal (the first question every poor swimmer asks!)?.  How about average temps and humidity?  Also, when I went looking for a fall IM last month I was pretty surprised to see Florida still open. I had thought it always sold out really quickly.  Has something changed with the race to make it less popular or is it the standard, more Ironmans means less at each race if attendance isn't rising over all?

    Any other tips gladly accepted!
  • Tom - it is almost universally wetsuit legal.  There may have been one year that wasn't.   When I first did it in 2008 there were no regional competitors.  Then came IMLOU ... not a competitor at first, but then it moved to mid-Oct.   And then came IM Maryland (even flatter), and IM Chattanooga with its downriver swim.  And let's not forget about IM Texas ... no need for those folks to drive to the Panhandle anymore if they only want to do one a year.  So what's changed?  A boatload of regional competition plus a flattening of the market for long course triathlon.
  • Tom - 2015 was the only year it wasn't wetsuit legal.  By Thursday afternoon you could not find a swimskin for sale within a hundred miles.  I didn't have a swimskin, so swam in my tri suit, not a good decision.  If you are really concerned, remember that if you are not looking to KQ you can still wear your wetsuit.  If I had to do it again that is what I would have done.
  • Tom-The average temp is probably mid 70's but there have been a couple of odd years. In 2014, the swim was cancelled and the temps were in the 40's with 20+mph winds. In 2015, the average temp for most of the bike was mid-upper 80's. Humidity can be pretty high. The swim is usually pretty rough with breaking waves at shore and rolling swells out at the turns. I noticed some people last year headed back to the beach after the turn who were getting carried by the waves off course. You can count on there being some wind on the bike from either one or two directions. Hope this helps!
  • I too am doing Florida for a 3rd time. 2015 was a tough swim, no wetsuit, fairly large surf.
  • Wk 9 Wed. bike done this morning on trainer. Over 80 deg. and nearly 100% humidity in garage, so even with 2 fans it was hot. Zn4 sets at .95 and .94, for the Zn5 sets I only did 4x1.5'(1.5') at 1.08, 1.07, 1.07, 1.05. I need to build up to the 4' on these. Pretty good workout.
  • Sorry!  I started this thread and was on vacation in Jackson Hole, WY for 10 days.  I hiked about 65 miles, ran about 20 and that was it.  I am back home and ready to get back on my bike tomorrow.  My training has been going well pre-trip, so I think I can pick up where I left off.

I did the race in 2014 and 15 and would have the same comments about the course and weather as those above.

Hope we can all keep talking about our training.  Stay in touch!
