How to extend the battery life on my Garmin 520?

So it seems that the battery decides to die after about 4 and a half hours on the bike, is there a function that I can turn off on the Garmin that I can turn off when riding outdoors and still get all the data I need?  Anyone have any info on this?

    Maximizing Battery Life

Thanks Paul, I will try all of that for the long ride this weekend, have tried a few of them already, but it didn't help, maybe the combination will...
  • Over time, the battery is just going to go no matter what you do.  I use the rock solid Garmin 500 and bought a new one (very cheap) when my old one could no longer make it through an IM.   At just 4.5 hours I'm guessing yours has a foot in the grave.
  • I found that having the bluetooth turn on KILLS the battery, I cant do a 4hrs ride when its on and when off, my battery is around 70% after a 6hrs ride.
  • The GPS setting is unique for each activity profile, so you could have a "Long Ride" profile that with satellite setting at GPS and alerts turned off

Bluetooth is a big burner, but it's so nice to see phone messages.  Not sure if you use Strava alerts, but keeping those disabled should help

I have Varia and P1 pedals, which probably shorten battery life a bit but I can't ride without them

Paul H is right about the overall battery life decreasing; if the fixes don't get you through a long ride then get a new one before IM Louisville; if they do then you should be able to hold off until next season.  Wonder if Garmin has a trade-in program...

Hey guys, I hope it is not the battery already, as I only got it about 6 months ago from our friends at trisports.com.  I will make the adjustments on it this weekend and experiment to see if the life is longer or not.  I only got the new one because my original 500 bit the dust after I do not know how many years or using it...
