Week 1: It's Here!

The official plan hasn't even started, and I'm already looking for shortcuts.  I ran a 10k last weekend that I'll use to set my VDOT, so I plan on doing 3 x 1 mile tomorrow at 5k pace instead.  I just can't do max running efforts without a race going on.

  • I was wondering who was gong to start it!

Ran a 4mi two weeks ago and a 10K yesterday and they verify my VDOT, I know my paces.

I'll be away this on vacation weekend so I'm going bike heavy during the week, then running and swimming while i travel.
  • Oops, I was looking at an older version of the plan that had a 5k test this morning. 2x1 mile sounds a lot more enticing.
  • I'm off to a good start, been struggling to get up on mornings before work. Not today . Out of bed at 0409, out running by 0430.  Continuing with slow run progression because of knee issues, so did 30 min, will do power walk/pool run after work + swim.

Woohoo, let the fun begin. have a great day everyone

  • Just finished my big bike week last week through Sunday.  Definitely using the first half of this week to recover and slowly get back into the workout plan.  Dont want to dig myself into a hole on week one of the program.

  • Does anyone know what weeks are test weeks? I can only see to week 2.
  • Did a 40min swim in the morning. Will have to take it easy on the run tonight recovering from long brick sat, and then racing sun.

Rest and TEst weeks are generally every 4 weeks, but we are a lot more flexible in the last 12 weeks to race since putting far ontop of your FAST is our #1 priority...what are you looking for?

Thanks P - I like to put the tests in my seson planning spreadsheet so I know what to plan for.

  • Off to an auspicious start. Coming home from a business trip to Vegas yesterday, ended up stranded in Detroit, got about 3 hours of sleep, and hopped around getting home today. So, I'm skipping both workouts today as I am totally exhausted. Going to bed now, hoping to get a good 10 hours before getting up to swim tomorrow.

    Here's hoping that it's not a sign... :-)

  • So, today was swim and run.  How'd it go?

I had a good swim.  Tweaked my shoulder just a touch (think it was already tweaked from carrying luggage halfway around the globe), but otherwise felt good.  Looks like I might be running in the rain, shortly.

  • Tracy, you're so good! The alarm goes off, I hit and roll over! I should have you text me when you get up to make sure I'm up, too!

Vdot this past Saturday! Went well! Have to juggle the schedule a little this week due to babysitting concerns, but settling in nicely. Actually looking forward to long run on Thursday. Downloaded some new stuff onto the 'pod.
  • I had to juggle my week around due to travel for mother's day weekend. So upon R's advice, I scheduled an after work bike session for myself. But, I neglected to pack a jersey and bib shorts this morning!!! So I just rode in my swim jammers and a white cotton tee. wow, i missed those jersey pockets. I must have looked completely ghetto fabulous in that outfit sitting on top of $2k+ worth of carbon pedaling around one of the most affluent neighborhoods in the area. But I got my MS in and that's all that matters. image
  •  @ Dana- I will text you. If you don't want 4am, I can do 5- 530 when I get back from run. I was not able to do my swims last 2 days, then work x 12 hrs is tough I will have to do more on my days off, or at least until get used to early ams, Won't do it on all days- tomorrow have to do ride/run in evening since I have meeting and have to be at work earlier. Will be doing lots of jiggling  though

Dana- glad Vdot test went well

Cary- great  getting that MS done on bike in jammers and tee

Mike- hope that shoulder settles down, and you are recovered from travel

Where did time go- already past my bed time

  • I'll be on board after Rev 3 in Knoxsville May 9th and a week of recovery. after a year off from Im for 8 straight yrs and 24 yrs of tris, i'm really looking forward to Lp after a total yr off from tris. I did a ton of bike miles last year so looking to give it a real go this year. i hope training is going for everybody. Be safe and enjoy the day.

  • Had a great brick this morning.  Bike felt strong, and getting off to run was quite a revelation.  I felt more comfortable running at Z1 than I have in a long time (felt easy to near effortless).  What a great feeling!  Nothing like a good brick to get the day off on the right foot.

@Paul, looking forward to having you on board!

@Tracy, thanks!  I think I'm getting there.  the body feels mostly rested, and the shoulder is much better this morning than last night.  Another day or so and I think it will be all good.

@Cary, I was thinking of you while on the brick this morning, as my knee warmers started to slowly creep down, showing a nice big gap between the tri shorts and the top of the warmers.  Thought "any looks I'm getting can't be as funny as the looks Cary had yesterday"

@Dana, you reminded me to get a new mix on the ipod before tomorrow.  Thanks!

  • So far so good. Both the Monday and Tuesday runs ended up being strength work. On Monday, I ran to the track in an absolute downpour and my shoes weighed five pounds each. I knocked off the 2 x 1 miles and had a decent swim in the evening. Yesterday, my three-year-old was up early so I took him for the 40' run in the jogging stroller. I ended up doing the Friday swim last night because it looked like it would take less time than the Tuesday swim--on Tuesdays, I take my six-year-old daughter to the pool for her 40' swim lesson, so I try to get my swim within that time period give or take a few minutes.

This morning, I was debating whether to ride the trainer in the basement, ride the road bike during the daily lunchtime informal crit race in DC, or ride the tri bike in the morning. I ended up outside on the tri bike. I don't have a good place for intervals longer than 10' close to home, so I did a couple of those and then pounded some hills to fill out the remainder of the time. I'm skipping the run today because I did some extra running on Sunday and don't think I should be running five days straight.
  • Had a long swim yesterday with the masters group. After 1 1/2 hr of swimming I thought my shoulders were going to blow up. Did the Z1 run after that and felt good, it gave my chance for my legs to recover after racing on the weekend.
The morning brick today was average, didn't feel that fast on the bike and power was down tried to make it up on the run. Now just have to bike back home.
  • Week 1 for me is week 3 on the road to running recovery.  I'm just gettting back to where I was in Jan after an injury to my hip/glute.

Did the swim on Mon after a 4 mile heavy legged run due to tough weekend on the bike.  Ran 9 miles yesterday morning which was a huge confidence booster for me.  No swim.  I think I'll just do 2 swim/week for a bit.  Looking forward to riding tonight.

Just happy to be able to run.    May not be as long or as fast as where I should be, but it beats not being able to run.

Looks like we've got a good group for LP this year.  Looking forward to watching everyone's progress.

  • I got my 100 minute run in before work this morning. I find the EN-style intervals within a long-run very challenging. I have no problem doing 3x1 at z4 during a one hour run, but doing 20 min at z2 or even 2x 8' at z3 very tough to impossible in any run over an hour. The pace gap between Z1 and Z2 is huge! At least I went the full distance. I got my second side stitch in the last week, though, after not having had one for years. I'm not sure what's up with that.

  • Nailed this morning's run, though I had to do it without the Garmin (low batteries).  Did it on feel, and felt very good doing it.  Glad I'd been doing a month of General Prep long runs, cuz this was the first one that felt good!

  • I sandwiched this week between two races. A 10 miler and a half. The 10 miler took more of a toll than I expected. First two runs were tough and I had to back off the zones. Yesterday's bike seemed to open them up for this morning though. I have to admit I started to run and skipped the brick. I was feeling tapped and didn't think the quality was there. I'm expecting to have another rough week next week unless my legs somehow decide to come around. That's the last race before I settle in, I'll just need to get rest where I can find it.
  • Wow - 4 hour bike + 30' run was a butt-kicker today. 50 degrees! 10' in Z4-5, 15' @ Z4-5, 20' @ Z4-5, 3 x 20' @ 85%, Then 30 minute Z2-Z3 run. whew - that was tough coaches!

  • I rode a century on Saturday. The weather was tough--it hit 90, and there was a 20+ mph headwind the entire second half. I found a good group and met a little 41-year-old woman who was kicking all the guys' butts. She was pulling 5 minutes at the front, while most of the guys were taking 30 to 60 second pulls. We went for a 30 min. brick run afterwards, and it turns out that she's following the EN advanced plan for IMCdA even though she's not on the boards here. Riding time was about 5:10, though I don't understand why roadies stop for such long breaks. I'd fill my water bottle and hit the road and go on my own until the peloton caught up and then latch on.

My f****ing Garmin trashed the power file, though. So I have nothing to show for it. Arrrgggh. I hate Garmins--they're nothing but trouble. I did a 1:40 minute ride this morning, and now I'm off to NY for two days. I should be able to find time to run and hopefully get in the pool at least once.

And my wife and I moved a piano by ourselves, and I didn't hurt myself. Mission accomplished!
  • How important is getting the long run done in the am??? I have to leave for work at 6:30. I am very dedicated but I think I draw the line at getting up at 4am.
  • Lesley, you gotta do what you gotta do. The coaches' recommendation is to "get up however stupid early you have to to get this done in the morning", so as to put 48 hours between the long run and the long ride on Saturday. Remember, it's a recommendation, not an ironclad rule. If you can't, you can't.
  • I initially bought the 12 week intermediate plan then joined the team. The workouts for the swim and the placement of the testing is different then the online plan that was set up for me. Anyone know why??
  • Hi Lesley,

Go with the online version. It's probably the most up-to-date. The 12-week plan you bought was designed to stand by itself and didn't take in to account being 'in haus' & having feedback from coaches & other members.

Have you done any testing yet? If not, you might want to shoot a quick email to the Micro thread (hurry before the coaches leave for TOC) and ask if you should test this week or what your week should look like.
  • Thanks. I did test for the bike and run even though that wasn't on the online plan because it didn't make sense to start without knowing that information.
  • So my compromise for doing the long run in the evening is going to be a mandatory ice bath. Taking one now as
I write this! Still better then getting up that early IMO. I might give it a try once however because the traffic is really bad when i get out of work and do the long run. It's a bit scary!
