Clark's Leadville Run Camp Plan

I know, who does an execution plan for camp... But seriously, I'm trying to get the most out of this experience, so I figured I'd throw something together and post it for feedback.

Leadville Camp Execution Plan

Goals:

  • Do no harm
  • Complete all of the scheduled runs
  • Learn, Learn, Learn
  • Have fun

What do I want to learn:

  • What are the impacts of the elevation?
  • Better understand key sections of the course
    • Hope Pass!
    • Climbs out of Leadville to base of Hope
  • Layout of the various aid stations
    • Parking options
    • Travel times
    • Road conditions
  • What is the terrain / footing, and will it be a factor or not?
  • Is there any cover?  Will I be in the sun all day?

Execution thoughts:

  • Day 2, 26 miles May Queen to Twin Lakes
    • Get up early to be ready with time to spare.
    • Eat breakfast, back to back days take a toll, so stay on top of nutrition.
    • It’s going to be cold in the AM, ask about clothing drop or plan to carry while running.
    • Take it easy, save energy for Sunday.
  • Day 3, 23 miles Twin Lakes over Hope Pass to Winfield and back
    • This will be the first time I’ve run 20+ on back to back days.
    • Get up early to be ready with time to spare.
    • Eat breakfast, back to back days take a toll, so stay on top of nutrition.
    • Take it easy up and over Hope the first time.
    • If I feel like “running” save it for the return trip.
    • Can I bring clothes to change into after the run? It’s going to feel cold at the cook-out and I’ll be cold unless I can change out of my running clothes.
  • Day 4, 15 miles May Queen back to Leadville (Night Run!)
    • it looks like it’s going to be cold!  Continue to check the weather and bring appropriate clothes.
    • Remember to bring my lights on the bus to May Queen.

@Clark Mitchell having never been to Leadville or spent too much time at altitude I am in the same boat. Looks like we are going to miss some course specific learning but I think we will come away from camp prepared for race day. I will prepare for camp similar to you and adjust from camp to race. Camp we only need to survive an hour or two each morning and a couple hrs the last night in the cold vs. race day 3-4 hrs in am and then the entire night!

    @Clark Mitchell My quick thoughts:

    • Bring all the chargers so all the gear is ready to record what you get done on the course.
    • Nightly journal entries or voice notes. What did you learn or observe? Will be nice subjective piece to Add to the objective data you'll have in a day or two when you return.
    • Recover post run like a boss. We want all the running , and quality (even if that's engaged mentally but smart physically) but we don't want it to cost too much.

    Pumped For you!
