BP Oil Updates

My wife found this announcement on IMFL and the oil spew.  Thought I would forward it along:

For some reason, I can't find a blog that said that IMFL is considering a last minute move to Orlando and Lake Clermont.  Probably internet conspiracy theorists, but newsworthy.  In any event, if anyone hears anything more current please post.

  • I highly doubt they will move from PCB to Clermont. There are only 2 decent hotels in Clermont...everyone else would be scattered across Orlando. That sounds like sheer rumormongering!
  • You're probably right, just reporting what I read somewhere. Here is more on IMFLfrom the Walton Sun. Wife just copied and emailed me the quote and I tried to find the actual link, but to no avail.

    From the Walton Sun:

“It’s five months away from Ironman Florida, and Race Director Ben Rausa has identified five bodies of water as possible venues to relocate the 2.4-mile swim on Nov. 6: Carl Gray Park, Lake Powell, the Intercoastal Waterway, St. Andrews State Park and Deer Point Lake.

“More than likely we’re going to be closer to town,” Rausa said. “We don’t want to lock in, but we want people to know we’re looking at places.”

Rausa stressed there will be a full-scale triathlon, not just a 112-mile bike and a 26.2-mile run, but the logistics of having to relocate the swim would mean two transition areas and having to rack almost 6,000 bikes twice. Rausa will host a meeting on Aug. 3 with local law enforcement and government officials to help determine the best alternative, if needed, to stage the swim.”

Those seem like more plausible alternatives than Clermont.

  • where are those places in relation to PCB?  I've already got the condo lined up (I suspect lots of folks have) and the cancellation policy is... well... it isn't is a better way to put it.  I think I'd get stuck losing the deposit and, if I remember correctly, charged for the entire trip unless they can rebook (and odds are slim to none they'd be able to rebook).  Hmm...

    thanks.

  • I went to high school in Panama City and have family there...know the area very well. Don't change your reservations. Most swim venues would be distant from the current one, but that doesn't mean there would be any lodging there. For example, Deer Point Lake - the furthest option would be very rural...nothing at all close to the swim start in terms of lodging. If they have to change the swim...which I think is looking less likely as the well stays capped, the most likely scenario under a separate T1 and T2 would mean driving yourself to the new swim location or boarding a bus that WTC would charter. They would set up the new T1 there, followed by some slight changes to the beginning of the bike course, but mostly on the current route andl ending up at T2 right where it is now on PCB. That would keep the marathon on the exact same route, keep the expo/registration the same, and the finish the same. So if your hotel/condo is close now, you would still be close to most of the action. I'm doing IMAZ (with our own worries about mud surfing with dead fish vs swimming), but I hope that IMFL goes off as normal for you guys. Good luck.
  • Paul is right. Google Maps has all those alternative venues just off the beach, but a quick drive back to PCB. Since moving a swim location and T1 is probably easier than moving expos, finish lines, first aid, etc., if there is a change, we'll be riding school buses to the swim start, but finishing our bikes and runs in the same location. See ya at the beach.
