Longhorn/Austin 70.3 2010

Who's in? 10/17/10

It's going to be my 2nd half 2010 "A" race.

A big group of folks from Dallas will be coming down to pre-ride the course sometime in Sept (I hope all on the same weekend). Always up for some EN peeps to join if they can/want.

  • Sorry dude. I will be prepping for IM AZ so Longhorn is not a possibility. Maybe Penny and I can do a weekend in Austin and catch up. Just one thing on pre-riding the course if you haven't done it before. The course is fine, until you get to the finish. Keith routed the course onto some much busier streets at the end to ditch a couple of epic climbs right before the finish. Race day is no big deal because of the traffic control. When you are riding it on your own, you just have to be mindful of the traffic, the lack of a shoulder at that point and the speed of the cars.
  • I'm in and it's my highest rank race at 'B'! For BBQ!
  • Actually, there is a road on the bike course called "Monkey" that isn't labeled. Finding it is a trick. When we drove the course a couple of years ago the day before the race there were all these cars in one area going in circles, backing up, etc. looking for that "damn Monkey!"

Great race except for the possibility of heat. Would love to meet up with you guys in Sept.

  • I am thinking about signing up so I can try to redeem my Lubbock Nutrition failure... its alot of $$ right now!
  • I would love to meet up in September, too! I'm out of the race this year because of IMFL but my sister might do it; in which case I'll be there to cheer you all on.
  •  I'm in and have two friends that will head down to ride in september.  Let me know a date.

  • I'm in. I am taking this Fall off from IM so this is my A race. I'm going to try to bring it on this HIM course. Will be there with two friends.
  • Ok I just found a few friends to stay with so I am 95% in and would love to come out and ride the course with people!
  • I'm in for this one as well as the May 21st Houston IM!

  • Is there a meet up date yet to preview the course?
  • I haven't seen anything yet, or proposed anything yet either.

Personally, I'd prefer a late August weekend.
Outside of August, the only weekends that would work for me are Sat/Sun Sept 18/19, Sat/Sun Oct 2/3, Sat/Sun Oct 9/10.
  • I am begining the official 12 week program leading up to this race date on Monday.  Anyone else in this forum on the same plan?

I completed the OS over the winter then repeated it again into the Summer, not fun.   Took two weeks off and complete 3 weeks of Gen prep.  This week I have completed both the run and swim test, also not fun with the bike test yet remaining.  Will do the bike test Saturday during the longer bike out on open road to define wattage zones.

Where is everyone else coming into this thing?  Anyone else doing the Texas IM with me in May as well?

    Go team!

  • Hey Shaughn,

I'm wrapping up the OS as well and am doing a week taper for the Centurion on 8/8 in Wisconsin and then some sort of recovery the week after so I’ll miss the beginning of the 12 week build up.  Still, I plan on jumping in the mix on week 9.  Between the 100min Centurion and the IMWI Rally I’m figuring there should be a few fitness bumps that I’m going to try and ride to Texas.

When is everyone getting there for the race?  Where are people staying?  My source for a room fell through recently so I’m scrambling a bit to find something.

  • I updated my training plan for the 20 week advanced based on the Longhorn race date, 10/17. That puts me 7-8 weeks into it already, carrying my Vineman 70.3 fitness into training, after this week totally off.

I'm checking on hotels right now. My suspicion is, pretty much anywhere in Austin is good enough, but I'll double-check that and get back to y'all (how's that for Texan?).

I'll be coming into town on Friday night, leaving Sunday post-race. I only live 3 hours away in Dallas.
  • Started with the 20 week also. We are heading down Labor Day weekend to ride a couple days, one of them including the course. Race weekend wwill be arrive Saturday and leave Monday.
  • There aren't any hotels close to the race site. What I would STRONGLY suggest is to get there EARLY! They have had issues getting everyone from parking to the race start in the morning. If you are there when they start running the buses, you get one of the first buses and a great parking space.

John and I stay up at The Domain.

  • Like Scott and Paul, I just jumped in the 20 week plan (at Week 8) after doing a modified OS/Gen Prep phase after Lonestar in late April. Too many hot dogs and too much beer this summer so far so pretty much flat line ftp, etc. since then. Could be worse!

@Shaughn: I'm doing the Houston IM in May too along with a bunch of EN'ers doing this race (or just planning to support). THere are a couple of threads in the Club House and Race Selection forums.

Wish I could join you all for the preview ride but travel from Pennsylvania pretty much rules it out.

I'm staying downtown for a big family reunion that weekend. Thanks for the advice Penny!
  • I'm into this race after all, along with my sister. Shaughn, I'm starting the 12 week intermediate plan on Monday. Looking forward to it!
  • I am going to this race. Will be nice to meet some of the other people in the group.
  • Kristen, I have hit all the WOs this week so far but had to double up yesterday with Swim first (because I missed it on Tuesday) then completed the run in the evening (95 degree heat in Dallas.....not fun but possible.)  The Dallas heat makes up for the flat surface here.

Looking to brick tomorrow (in Austin.)  Hope all is going well with you guys on the plan so far.  As we get closer to Labor Day, let me know who is going to ride the race course (if that is still applicable) and I will show up with the team.  Currently I work in Dallas during the week and travel home to Austin over the weekends to be with my family.

For those needing a room on race day or on Labor day, all EN'rs have a room at my house that can sleep two and has its own shower / bath if needed.  As long as you're ok with 4 kids (3 of which are testosterone filled young boys.)

As a local Austinite, let me know what I can do to support this group as the time draws near.  Also look forward to seeing some of you in Houston on May 21st!

  • @Shaughn - We met when Patrick came to Austin. I'm in for Longhorn. Also started the 12 week plan this past week.

I live on the east side of Austin, so parts of the Longhorn route is on my regular route. As someone previously mentioned, the route returns back to Walter Long park on a very busy road (969) and there is no shoulder. There are some other back road I usually take to get back to Walter Long park and has some good climbs.

Let me know when everyone plans to make it to Austin to ride the route. I'll be doing a race rehearsal over Labor Day weekend if anyone is in town.

  • Rich, I remember, glad your in!  Hopefully we'll have a good size group for the Labor Day rumble on the Longhorn course!

    Completed the Sat/Sun WOs below:

Friday night arrived home from Dallas and successfully executed a birthday party and sleep over for Lauren and 7 friends.  11 yr old girls do not go to bed before midnight.  Finally got some Zs some time after 12:30 but did not roll out of the drive way Sat morning until 6:30 a.m.  I did the following intervals:   1X10’@Z4, 1X15’@Z4, 1X20’ @ Z4 then 3X2’0@Z3 (2’)

For the life of me, could not hit the .95 IF due to the compressed schedule from the Tues-Friday WOs doubling up (because life happened and could not get the Mon stuff in.)  Did hit the 80-85% IF for the first two Z3 intervals but had little to nothing left during the second half of the last Z3 interval.  57.8 miles total with an avg .80 IF.  Got back too late to run but did run after Sunday's bike.  Was all work for me………..  My recent tests last week is keeping me honest on the IF below:

  • Keep me posted about the Labor Day ride, guys! Which day of that weekend do y'all plan to ride? I may be able to make it. Week 1 went well, no cheating, no shortcuts. I do move Friday's swim to the previous Sunday because I mentally really need a day off during the week to not get up at 0 dark "30 before work. Onward to Week 2!
  • My group is heading down Friday to do a 60 mile ride with 4500 ft of climbing and then riding the course on Saturday. Driniking Friday and Saturday night.
  • Ok, let's shoot for Saturday unless other's can't make it.  Paul, you're in charge of the beer session afterwards.

  • I just got back into town last night. Y'all still planning on this weekend? I'll prob not make it. I do want to pre-ride if I can before race weekend.
  • I just started the 12 wk plan last week also. This has been a pretty unproductive summer and Austin 70.3 will cap my "1 race season" so that makes it my A race for sure. I will be gearing up right afterward for IM Texas also. Hope I can make it down for a pre-race ride since I live in Abilene which is only a few hrs. away.

  • Welcome Jeff, we can be suffer buddies!

  • Week 2 is behind us TG!  Onward.............

    I made it through Sat with a solid WO doing 2X20' (5') Z4 at .95 and .96 followed by 5X15'(2') at .85, .86, .85, .88, .88 respectively:

    Entire workout (227 watts):

          Duration: 3:01:00

          TSS:       208.9 (intensity factor 0.832)

          Norm Power: 244

          Distance: 60.481 mi

                                  Min   Max   Avg

          Power:            0     498   227  watts

          Heart Rate:      88    159   145  bpm

          Cadence:          34    212   76    rpm

          Speed:            0     34.1 20.0 mph

Run was solid today but a bit painful albeit:  3.5 Miles 8:15 overall avg pace.......

    Sunday Bike (214 watts):

        Duration:           2:06:22

        TSS:                  122.6 (intensity factor 0.764)

        Norm Power:    224

        Distance:          40.038 mi

                                  Min     Max    Avg

        Power:              0         420     214     watts

        Heart Rate:       75       150     136     bpm

        Cadence:          30       212     74       rpm

        Speed:              0         36.9    19.0    mph

  • Just rode part of the course this morning... noticed a lot of parked cars near T1 this morning, probably some of the local training groups.
