70.3 Syracuse Who is Going?

Just established this since I did not see anywhere else.  Are there any EN members planning on racing this?

  • We covered this a while ago, it was only two of EN peeps back then.

Can we make a showing here? I'd be great to get 10 of us.

  • I agree,  I see that there is a thread already estableished.  If enough people comit I am in.  I need a late season 1/2

  • I'll see if I can nudge Chris G when I see him this weekend.
  • I'm in already.  This is almost a backyard race for me.  Should be good.  Downside will be the finish away from the transition area but I will deal with that in exchange for the run course that is almost all down hill.

  • ok we Cary and I are looking to ee if we can rally a few more to have a decent showing

    Anyone Else?

  • I've been keeping my eye on this. I've not run or swam in over a month, but the bike is strong. I have a med. procedure on 8/2 which will limit my activity for a while...if i can get in a solid month of running and swimming, then I'll join you.
  • cool one more////
  • I'll also be there, looking forward to my second race reppin EN!
  • Sorry if this is a dumb question...It looks like the run is a point-point, as opposed to out and back. I've never done a Tri like that before. How does that work?

    tx
  • Usually, you take a shuttle to the transition area after the race to collect your stuff. Hopefully they'll have this set up - I need to read the race guide (if it's out yet), otherwise you're on your own getting back to transition.
  •  You run from one point to the other...

It is usually a bit of a cluster as you either need someone to either drop you off at the race start/transition area or end up taking a shuttle of some sort assuming that they have one.  While racing it wont matter.  You just have to go back later and get your bike etc.

Looks like they changed the bike course again and it is not as hilly.  Good thing as I have been riding my bike about once a week and not for very long.

I had planned to be racing with my little sister but she can't play as she is expecting and her belly is a tad big to ride aero these days.  Maybe next year.

  • ugh...hopefuly there's a shuttle. I'm solo at this one, so walking back 13.1 is not going be funimage

  • Hello all. I am a new EN team member, 6 marathons in past but no Ironmans ("Ironmen"?) image I too will be racing at Syracuse for my first HIM. I look forward to chatting with you and meeting you all! Jon
  • Also, as the resident Clydesdale I'm trying to procure an XXL size EN tri singlet for the race; if you guys have any leads please let me know thanks!

  •

"What sold me on Jamesville was the fact that it's close to the city, you can get to the bike course very easily -- I mean, you just ride outside the park, and you're on Apulia Road. And you have the ability to park 3,700 cars. You're talking about convenience for athletes. They can drive to the race. They have their car on the site. They set up their equipment. They swim in the lake. They bike. They run to the downtown. We shuttle them in buses from the Inner Harbor back to the park. They can put their stuff in their car, put their bike on their car, and drive home."

So I guess there will be shuttles.
  • I guess that answers that, hopefully there will be a lot of windows on the bus, thanks Cary.
  • I added Jonathan Lieberman & Dan Forbes to the list.
  •  Looks like a nice group is forming for this.  I am almost kinda sorta looking forward to it.  Wish I was more focused the last few weeks but must admit to having a pretty good time while getting some training in.  I will be in Skaneateles this weekend for the wedding which ruined my Timberman plans and hope to ride at least part of it.  Will report back.

Anyone else racing Skinnyman and/or the rest of the races in Skaneateles on Labor Day weekend?

  •  Did the course today.  Just some general notes, parking will be great for athletes, pain in the ass for support if they are going to meet you at the finish.  Also, not that it is a big deal with races this long or longer, spectating will minimal to just the beach area or just waiting at the finish since the run is point to point.  You are really out on some east bumble f roads for the majority of the bike and the run is on major roads into syracuse.  I didn't see much for space at the finish area either.  But, I don't want to bitch because the course is quite beautiful in the heart of the state.  That being said, anyone who knows upstate NY should already be aware of the hills involved.  Nothing major as far as grade is concerned, but you basically climb as soon as you leave the beach for close to the first 40-50 minutes up hills relative to that of the climb out of Wilmington to Placid.   Just step upon step.  Once you peak, you will come down for some time into Fabius and then you are on flat for a bit, then its rolling terrain for the majority of the ride.  The hardest part was knowing where the hell to go.  When I say there are at least 10 different roads you will be on, I mean that.  Very confusing.  Luckily I had a navigator in a car to lead the way, so I really don't know the course well, but would figure it out on my own now.  I'm sure during the race it won't be a problem.  There are about 3 steep climbs, but they are short and not much of a worry.  there was one time I looked down and my speed was 4.3 mph.  I really tried to stay within my wattage range.  Once you get onto 13 it flattens out again (latter half of the course) then you turn on 91 and you hit rollers.  At the end of 91 you get kicked in the nuts as there is a climb in the last half mile or so.  You get on 80 briefly then turn off of that and are lost on some real back roads that pretty much are going down hill until you get back on to Apulia road and then it is rolling back to the beach with one last moderate climb, but the wind was at my back.  I didn't think it was extremely difficult being that it is the terrain I am used to, but still I was ready to be off the bike at the end.  Considering I've been on the OS all year I was happy with my numbers.  My ftp is 250, 3.0 w/kg.  My NP was 209 (should be 213), VI 1.02, 18.5 mph, tss 209, IF 84, time 2:59.  I did the ride right after a major storm, so I think the wind was low compared to usual.

The run, I only had time for 5 miles, you climb out of the park, some flat, then around mile 6 (I drove it) at the recycle plant, there is tough hill, then it is down hill into syracuse and flat in the city.  Big exposed roads, the sun was relentless but I assume on Sept 19 it won't be that bad.  I can't type anymore, I'm tired.  Got home, and immediately got back into the car to go to the fair got back home at 10pm.

  • Dan thanks for the insight. Looking forward to t.
  • Dan, thanks for posting!
  • @Dan - thinking about going up this weekend to ride - is the course you rode the same as what's posted on the web? (Everyone seems to mention how it's changed a few times so wanted to see if your route matches the website's course)
  •  @Joe: sorry for not replying, for some reason I didn't subscribe to the topic!!  I hope you found your way around the course okay.  I don't know if they made updates on the map, but it was somewhat wrong, the turn by turn directions were better, but would be a nightmare to follow on the bike by yourself.

  •  Is there a plan for a gathering of EN peeps for the race?

  • The only 'plan' I have for the weekend is showing up, doing the race and having Dinosaur BBQ for dinner on Sunday night.

I'll plan on getting there late Friday. I'm staying at the Holiday Inn. Recon and Rack on Saturday.
  • Love that plan Cary! Planning on doing the same thing. In fact, i think they will be spotlighting Dinosaur BBQ in S-cuse on tv show Man vs Food on 9.1 or 9.2, I plan to record it. I won't be arriving at S-cuse until late afternoon Saturday but will also need to do recon, maybe we can meet and take notes together? My cell 215.565.5170. FYI this will be my first Iron-Anything so a little nervous, but since becoming EN team member feeling more confident by the day. image
  • I will be trekking up early Sat am, leaving Bucks County with wife around 6am so should be in 'Cuse by noon - always been paranoid abt getting to packet pickup ontime since debacle 10 yrs ago; drove over 2 hrs in killer rainstorm after a century ride in MD (Seagull Century) to DC, had shut down roads so didn't get to Army 10miler packet pickup until 20 minutes after it closed; needless to say, it being the Army, they wouldn't give me my chip even after I begged and pleaded. So been gun shy ever since. Planning on doing some recon Sat afternoon and relaxing with wife. Def planning on hitting up Dinosaur BBQ AND/OR Heigs hotdogs on Sunday after the race. Maybe even Monday too. Staying at the Maplewood Inn in Liverpool. Wherever the heck that is.
  • Hope your race went well, Jonathan!  Looking forward to your race report from Syracuse 70.3!

  •  From a buddy who used to live there:

Here are my top recommendations for Syracuse places to eat. I had to go back and look a bit, but I can vouch for any one of these

    1)     Angotti's Family Restaurant (725 Burnet Avenue): Excellent Italian, Sicilian style, family run, affordable.

    2)     Zebb's Deluxe Grill & Bar (2803 Brewerton Road, Mattydale): Killer burgers.

    3)     Dinosaur Barbecue 246 W. Willow street (it’s worth the wait and they usually get you in and out of there) They are used to being packed. I would go there in a heartbeat.

    4)     Pascale’s Wine Bar and Restaurant (204 West Fayette Street): Incredible food, steaks, seafood, wine, a little more upscale, but worth the price. It’s one of the best restaurants in Syracuse. It’s a great place to celebrate.

    5)     Clark’s Ale House: They make unbelievable roast beef sandwiches and have excellent microbrew on tap.

    6)     Ichiban: 302 Old Liverpool Road, Liverpool, NY: it’s a killer Japanese style restaurant where they cook in front of you. A lot of fun and excellent food.
