Track Cycling

Hi folks.

Anyone have specific experience with using track workouts as some (or some weeks, perhaps all) of the OS cycling work? I'm fortunate to (i) live near a really nice track; (ii) own a pretty good track bike; (iii) like riding said bike on said track; and (iv) have access to a semi-organized workout/open training on the track 2-3 days a week.

Typically, I get off the banking sometime in Mar/April and focus on the road, but from Oct/Nov through winter, it has in the past few years been a nice (safer, warmer, friendlier) alternative to road riding in the dark or trainer rides in my garage. I assume that if the work intervals are similar and duration is similar, then it's all good -- with the added benefit of working on a supple high-cadence spin to keep the bike rolling along at 25+ on a 50x15 gear.

Thanks and appreciate input...

  • Tim -
I think the adjustments would be fine...we might have something to say about the longer weekend ride depending on your season plan outside of track, but that can be fixed with a few forums posts. Of course, we'd want pics...

  • Not a coach in the least, but I rode track all last winter. I think it is a blast, WAY more fun than spinning or computraining. And the workouts are EN OS friendly, by nature they are heavy on intervals and short, in the 1-2 hour range. I think they also help with bike handling and certainly riding in groups (as triathletes are notorious for lacking both skills sometimes). I loved it so much I finally bought a track bike last spring and can't wait to start riding there again in October.

  • Thanks Patrick, and helpful.  Track for me is mostly a work week thing, as its very time efficient and fits mostly into the rest of my life.  Weekends, I typically ride outside all year (SoCal, after all) ... so no worries there.  Happy to post pics if I get on the boards wearing some EN kit.

BTW, for EN folks who might consider taking a spin around the track and are locals to LA area, the HD Center track has a weekly class and after that regular workout schedule.  Worth a  look for some high intenstity, alternative workouts over the OS.

If you have enough people, you can even rent the venue for a group session.
