Hello everyone... Sorry, I've been out of touch of the past few weeks. Still trying to stick to the plan given all the events of life... hey, today was a day off... check.
Looking forward to the race next week. Got a lot of inspiration watching the IM Hawaii yesterday... what an amazing duel between Macca and Raelert on the run.
It was killing me to watch the US Open olympic from the sidelines this last weekend, made me want to race SO bad. Still not swimming because of the ribs, so no racing for me it seems. Maybe a du in mid-November.
Wish I was down there with y'all, but I'm sure you'll crush it!!!
Just drove the bike course...the first 10-12 miles seemed terribly hilly! The rest was beautiful, rolling, and very 'Texas'. The roads seemed pretty rough in several areas...
It sounds like the water temp is between 74-75...in talking to a local and a guy with a temp gauge on hit watch who I swam with, so, wet suits will be on I guess.
It was also interesting to see that a good portion of the run course appears to be grass/trail running. Hope that goes well...didn't prepare for that, but, I guess it really isn't anything but softer and more gentle on your body.
Over all, I am ready to get this thing cranked up! Great venue!
@Scott: Thanks! Wish you were here too... Hope the ribs are healing well.
@Stephen: good news on the water temp... I've been in the pool a grand total of 3x in last two months. Shoulder is still dicey but should be OK to get me to the bike, where I'll try to stay upright for a change.
I just arrived in Austin. Staying at the Holiday Inn Express (I'll look you up Jeff). My cell is 814-883-3689.
Looking forward to meeting/seeing everyone tomorrow!
Paul, It was great meeting you. I hope your race went well. This was a very hot race for me. I had a great first half of the bike, Followed plan exactly and wal averaging almost 22 and felt awesome. Then my Garmin died. It really threw me for a loop and I had a hard time recovering and riding without power and going off of PE. When I got to the run, I had the strength but the heat just beat me down.
Was still a great race and very well run. Happy with my time.
Tell you guys what...that run was some kind of nasty! I knew is was partly off road...but that was about 50% off road, and 100% either uphill or downhill. It was brutal! I should have done some trail running in preparation for that thing!
It was a great event...but it was hard to really execute my race plan for the run due to the hills.
Great work out there yesterday gentlemen! Stephen, you're a rocket. Amazing performance considering the hills and temps bro
My summary:
Swim – non eventful and very happy with this one.
T1 - a little slow from not having raced in a year – could not get the damn wetsuit off……..
BIKE – May have pushed a tad too hard on this but still happy with the results / wished I would have stayed in my box a little better in order to have run faster. 20.8 mph avg
T2 – happy with this as it was my best transition time
RUN – first loop was fairly strong (a little too fast for the first 3 miles however) 8:23 avg pace Second loop, it was getting damn hot and I could not really take in anything other than water due to stomach pains coming on from the heat.
Last two miles really slowed my down. One issue is that I was doing my training runs during the cool mornings for the last three weeks which hurt me on the time. Second loop was 9:23 pace.
