70.3 Miami, 2010
ONE MONTH!!!
Any other EN Team members competing in Miami?
This will be my first HIM in addition to my first time in Miami...I am hoping some of you have experience racing there (or live there) and can comment on some aspects of the venue. I'm specifically wondering what to expect in the way of wind on the bike course to better decide on wheels (to rent.) The historical data indicates average wind of about 10mph with some years quite a bit more windy and some years a bit less windy.
Has anyone used ironmanwheels.com ? If so, thoughts or opinions on the service?
I live and train in Northern Virginia, so heat and humidity are a daily part of training (though we will be mostly past that part of our year here in a couple of weeks.) Any other issues I should be aware of?
Thanks,
Ben

I will be in Miami as well. Where are you staying? I am at the Courtyard Miami Downtown. The venue should be great. Everything is close by if you are staying downtown Miami.
The bike course is mostly flat, just one bridge for an out and back. You are right, this is the windy time of year. I live in Tampa and it can get pretty windy near the water. This is the part where there might be some wind as it goes to and from Miami Beach. Otherwise you are on city streets heading south of town, depending on the wind direction it could be a nice ride. I have Zipp 1080's on my bike but I am used to them and the wind, if its really bad I may go to my 808's. My only concern would be the condition of some of the road sufaces (potholes).
The run should be the biggest test, picture yourself running up and back the W. Wilson Bridge twice. Not quite the distance but the grade.
Stay in touch, I am in town from Thursday through Sunday, maybe we can meet someplace.
Rick
Rick,
Glad to find someone with some ground truth guidance!
My wife, our friend Tristan and I are all doing the race and will be staying at the Intercontinental from Wednesday on.
Is it the MacArthur causeway section that is like the W. Wilson Bridge?
Thanks for the info! We should try to meet up once we're all settled in!
Ben
Ben,
Have you seen the course changes for Miami? I think they are good, a square swim, pretty flat out and back bike, and a lot easier run with no big bridge. Have a great race!
Rick
Heard there was a lot of problems at Miami, and WTC had this to say:
