Mount Baldy is RIGHT in my backyard. This would be a MUCH better ride for us than the Big Bear stage, as we could leave right from my house, or nearby, nearly deserted roads the whole way and the to Baldy is epic.
After a climbing, rolling ride along an awesome ridge you drop down into Mt Baldy Village. Turn left for a 5mi climb to the ski lifts. Starts at 7-8%, then consistent 9-10, then some 12-13% swtichback stuff, then last .25-.5mi @ 16%. Yeehaw!
Host cities to be announced tomorrow, Thursday. We'll find out of they are indeed finishing at Mt. Baldy, just in time for my Banjo Ride next Saturday which will feature a climb to the Baldy Ski Lifts
• Stage 1: Sunday, May 15 – South Lake Tahoe to North Lake Tahoe-Northstar at Tahoe Resort
• Stage 2: Monday, May 16 – North Lake Tahoe-Squaw Valley USA to Sacramento
• Stage 3: Tuesday, May 17 – Auburn to Modesto
• Stage 4: Wednesday, May 18 – Livermore to San Jose
• Stage 5: Thursday, May 19 – Seaside to Paso Robles
• Stage 6: Friday, May 20 – Solvang Individual Time Trial
• Stage 7: Saturday, May 21 – Claremont to Mt. Baldy
• Stage 8: Sunday, May 22 – Santa Clarita to Thousand Oaks
Unfortunately (??) for R and/or P, these dates conflict with IMTX (Saturday May 21). Ruh roh, whatever to do?!?
WOW!!!!!! Very different. My notes:
Tahoe! I've moto'ed that side of the lake. Awesome!
Looks like Stages 1-2 are new
Stage 3 = we did this route this year?
Stage 4 = the reverse of Stage 4 (?) this year. That's relatively short? They may do a circuit of Sierra Rd like they did in '07?
Stage 5 = the coast is BACK!! Awesome ride and will be MUCH better weather than '08, last time they did this stage. The best part is, I think, that they will have to get to Paso Robles by taking Naciemento-Furgeson Rd from the coast. LnD, this is the awesome route we rode in '09, through the army base. This ride, from Seaside to Paso via N-F Rd will be INCREDIBLE. We'll probably pull everyone out of the course at the base gates on the east end and start driving to Solvang. This will be a long transfer.
Solvang is BACK!!! STRUEDEL!!!!!!!!! MUCH better than a TT in LA. Glad they whacked that one. Pretty long drive to Monrovia, where we'll stay the night of Friday, May 20.
Claremont to Mt. Baldy is kinda short. "Only" about a 20-25mi climb if they go straight up the road? We'll take a back way which will be on deserted roads until we get into Baldy.
Saturday will be a riding day so plan for LATE flights out Saturday or Sunday morning
Kababs, rice, salad, beers, and fire on my deck Friday night!
I'm psyched! Handing this list off to Joanne so she can book hotels.
From the start in Claremont, the riders will be able to see the finish some 6,000 feet above them in the San Gabriel Mountains. The final route hasn’t been set, but it will feature the locally iconic climbs of Glendora Mountain Road and Glendora Ridge Road, before heading up to the Baldy ski area, which features 11-percent grades in the final 5km. The first true mountaintop finish in the race’s six-year history should give rise to a true Tour de France atmosphere.
Messick: “We’ll have a mass participation ride on the route of the Baldy stage, a couple of week before, to give people the taste of how hard it is to race in the pro peloton.”
GMR is my local TT hill, 8.7mi @ 5-6% . So we will likely ride to the bottom (12mi, 45'), do a Camp TT up the hill for bragging rights, then carry on to Baldy. We'll likely have to park the camp vehicles on a hill outside of Mt. Baldy Village. You'll then drop down into the village and climb to the ski lifts (5mi @ 8-15% ). Watch the finish then ride down and back up the vehicles. There will ZERO parking in Baldy and at the finish. No worries, it's all downhill from the lifts to the village, then a short .5mi @ 7% climb back up to the vehicles.
No worries, it's all downhill from the lifts to the village,
How many times did we hear this last year?
No, really, it's all downhill . It's so downhill that a big guy friend of mine, about 265lb, melted the rims on his fancy carbon wheels because you have to be on the brakes, pretty hard, the whole way down or you accellerate up to 35+ instantly before a tight switchback.

@DC...no just was very hesitant to commit to 2011 TOC at first with IM France (6/26/2011) so close but I looked back after last year and realized that I was the strongest about 6 weeks after TOC'10 and TOC'11 should put me just right for this years IM. I just gotta fit in a few runs while I'm there but you know how beat you are after some of those rides.....Hope there is still room!!!
I found this on a motorcycle forum I frequent. PCH is a BIG money road for a many, many people. As bankrupt as the state is, I'm sure they're scrambling to fix this but...no updates yet.
I found it, finally! I laid awake last night thinking that I was surprised there wasn't a group for ToC 2011. You all decided to hide it under the 2010 group. Lot's of catching up to do....

IMHO, nothing wrong with having a rest day before Baldy, if it's anything like the SoCal folks say!

Uh, Yeah, I think I'd rather keep climbing up!
RS: "uh, yeah, I might have undersold this a little"
Classic moments! I can't wait for more of that kinda abuse!
My favorite from the last tour.
More details, this time in the form of possible routes...

Yup! Looking forward to more FTP+ till you pop.
@Mike - what happened? Plans change for 2011?
@Mike - Hope you can make it. I'm really looking forward to getting back there. Now if I could just stick to a diet plan....

Man, I sure wish I could join y'all. I wish I would just win the lottery and be able to do these things ALL the time!
A major kink in our plans to ride PCH down to Naciemento Furgeson Road.
Section of PCH Collapses

Looks like the road will be closed for a month, hopefully fixed by ToC!
