How to handle away time...
Saturday morning the DW and I are leaving for a week away in tropical paradise. I doubt I'll have access to much except my running shoes while I'm there. I've been looking around for how to make adjustments to the training schedule to handle situations like this. Can anyone get me pointed in the right direction or give some advice?
The part I'm most worried about is missing a week of biking and then jumping back into the schedule when I get back.
Thanks!

First- Lucky Dog! Enjoy the warm weather!!!
Second, check out this Wiki post on advice for handling this exact situation:

To repeat what Jenn said, @Nemo, I appreciate the rapid response!
Tom- I've found finding times to sneak away for a run when my hubby wants to sleep in, nap, or do something I'm not interested in usually works out as a win-win for both of us "go ahead hon- catch a few waves on the surf board, I'll just sit here and read a book ;-) "
Tom - The wiki handles the "what do I do" question, but is kinda silent on "how do I deal with my anxiety about missing workouts and picking it up again".
FWIW, I do this every year, 1 or 2 ski trips of 10-15 days each, and I worry just as you say, but it never seems to affect either my training when I get back, nor my races months away. To ease my guilt, I drop in the pool for 20-30 minutes several times, or lift weights x 30 minutes, or try to run on a treadmill with no fan at 8000' elevation. This are usually desultory workouts which seem to be mainly for my guilty conscience and not for my training needs. I could save the $10 is costs me to go to the health club each time when I do them, I think. This time (Feb 3-15) I may just go without and see what happens.
PLEASE tell me you are going to get in some warm ocean swimming while there, my absolute favorite activity in the world. A protected bay, turquoise water, a few fish underneath, no wetsuit and no flip turns.
I am headed to Park City on Thursday for what has become our once a year weekend ski trip. I've moved my workouts to Monday through Thursday and will substitute my run on Sunday with snow shoeing.
My hotel will be right on 7 mile Beach. The water looks fantastic out there. It sounds like there is great opportunity to swim along the shoreline, so without a doubt I'll be partaking! I'll have my fins and mask along, so I'll try and get in as much snorkeling and diving as I can get in too. Been a while since I've been on a dive, so that could be interesting.
I go scuba diving every year for 2-3 weeks, usually during OS. If we live on the boat- there is ZERO exercise, not even snorkeling, but lots of eating and sleeping. We dive 4-5x/day so it is tiring. Coming back home is actually energizing. If we are land based, I run hills or TM or turn the cranks on a stationary bike. More because scuba diving from land does not wear me out and I need to burn off energy.
Enjoy your time away. We have plenty of time!
Last year was 12 days of scuba diving and I was horribly seasick, literally living on ginger ale and ritz crackers the entire trip. I lost 10 lbs. Came home and raced a HIM 3 days later- not my best race, but what can I say? I recuperated for 3 more days as I started the 12 week IM program. It was fine.
In all honesty, I've been pretty ashamed of my workouts, and been delinquent on my posts for pretty almost the same reason. Just got back from a week's worth of vacation on Monday, and then leaving Chi-town from the 4th to the 21st (anybody sense that i hate cold weather here!!!!)
From a beginner's standpoint, I did the wiki suggestions of what i before I went back home, and now I'm back on a questionable schedule ;-)
I found that I was able to hit the 2x12s this week, with no problem at all (and my run was pretty comfortable in between, even though I struggled before leaving)
I'm trying to build heavy bike weeks now, cos for 2 weeks, my bike access will be limited. I will be running at altitude for a week, and in San Diego for another week at a meeting, so at least hoping to get my run in a better shape.
@Al - thanks for posting that you miss 2 weeks. I was itching sooooo bad, and kinda anxious. a little bit of a relief ;-)
Enjoy the carribean - We'll be waiting for dem pix ;-)
I've been back a week now... about time for me to post some pics from my week away from the OS! I had a great time on my trip. I only did one run while I was down there and spent the rest of my time relaxing. Defintely worth it to take the time off. I came back feeling strong and hitting my workouts without really missing anything! I think I need to schedule one of these types of trips every month during the OS!
Sunsets
Snorkeling
Stingrays
Sea Turtles
Sailing
More Stingrays
JetSki Fishing
Your trip looks awesome! Really great pics.
I just found out we will be living ona boat again for the March dive trip. That means 10 days of no exercise. Add in flights half way aoround the world and it is a full 2 weeks! I'll be all revved up when we return. Right now I am on countdown mode untl we leave....5 weeks!
Thanks for sharing the pics Tom! SAU points as well... nice!
@Jenn SAU points were a VERY important part of this trip. I think I banked a few!!!
