AIP (A** in pool) for me! I swam last night. It appears that one of the best things I've done for my swimming was stay out of the pool long enough to forget at least a third of my bad habits. I felt really balanced and like there may be hope of a return to bilateral breathing.
@Beth, I did 4000m this morning, now heading out in 54F to run, just waiting for my better half to show up from work that we could share the joy. She runs with me. Out for 5@EP.
2500m in the pool with my masters team. I have SO much fun with that group! It takes me MONTHS to get a feel for the water and feel "normal" again. I LOVE that swimming groove, and it's nice to have it back. Coach even told me my "freestyle" looked good. That's a first, believe me!
Does roller skating with my 5 and 7 year old count for rogue duty? If so, put me down for 60'
I couldn't put the moves on since my daughter was attached to my arm the whole time and I was worried sick a speedy fifth grader was going to take me out and ruin my yet to be determined season.
Happy to report, I made it out of there safely.
Oh yeah, forgot to mention the morning started with seeing a puddle on the kitchen counter. Upon further investigation, I was kicking my daughter out of her bed so I could climb out the window and shovel the roof off. More than two feet of snow and lots of ice dams were removed in less than 30' of high intensity work. The leak stopped before it cause major damage and I didn't fall through the skylight, so all in all, a good day off.
@Dave: Ouch with the snow... what are you guys up to? 4' by now? The coast has really been hit hard this year. I can't remember the last time that Long Island and NYC have received more snow than upstate.
Skate ski fun this weekend! I'm beginning to get the hang of it but still working WAAAAY hard to not move very far. Went this morning---was so sweaty/huffing/puffing that 6 degrees didn't seem cold at all. I have moments of beautiful gliding that I think "Aw sure, I could do the Birkie." Truth is 50K on skis would be a multiday event for me. Ha! I've not run or ridden my bike on pavement since IMWI---for the bike: mtb, 'cross, trainer; for the run: trail shoes on dirt, screw shoes on snow, snowshoes on lots 'o snow. I don't anticipate feet or tires touching asphalt for at least another 2 months.
@Kitima, rollerblades would have been current compared to the four wheeled skates I was on. One of my son's friend's mom who grew up here said the roller skates are the same ones used there when she was a kid.
I was hoping to x country ski or downhill ski on Sunday, but it just wasn't in the cards. Ended up doing an hour of hurt on the bike and just did stuff around the house. Had a great swim w/ my sis tonight, so that's about all I can report for rogue activity. Plenty more shoveling on deck for tomorrow and Wed.
Great ride on Saturday, 90' snowshoe after. Overslept on Sunday. Since we had plans to visit my oldest son at his new place near to us--he used to be 3 hours away in VT--Sunday was off.
Today was off too as I made another trip to the Gait Lab, and by the time I got home I was just too wiped. Long walk in the woods with the dog was my workout today.
I'm still in "running jail," as gait lab dude Al calls it. LOL! It's hard to convey to y'all what's going on. But I am "earning" back the "right" to run through creating strong and proper movement patterns. The more I do this, the more I understand what they're doing with me, how much I need it, and how much better off I will be down the road. Remember how EN was a huge paradigm shift in training, and how it took some re-learning what work means? This is the exact same thing. My running has been going nowhere b/c my movement patterns are a study in bad compensations, and I can't progress any further by using my body in all those weak and incorrect ways. I just can't muscle my way to better performance using all the wrong muscles.
I've gone as far down the running road as my compensating body will let me. It's just like re-building your swim stroke from start to finish, only this is movement and running. It's fascinating, actually. And, truly, I don't care how long it takes. If I rush it, I'm just going to go right back into my injury-prone running default.
So that's what I did on my rest/rebuilding day today.
I have been stealth and not working out..........Traveled a boat load, killed my sciatic nerve during the first week fitness test and have not been able to run and just now getting over the flu and a lung viral infection........I am trashed! I am going to have to start all over again. I went stealth because I didnt want to complain about my injury but the flu pushed me over the edge. I will have to go rogue for a while and play catch up. Wish you all the best!!
@Dave: You know I like the 4 wheeled roller skates better than rollerblades for the big rubber thingy that you could point your toe down and stop. There's no stopping on rollerblades---except crashing into something. Kevin can skate on rollerblades like he's freaking Gretsky, but he's an aberration of athleticism.
@Greg: Respiratory infection on top of injury...UGH! Well, the flu can work out for your injury in that it serves as forced rest. Hope you're feeling better soon.
@LP: With all the functional strength training, is running jail a labor camp? I'm anticipating that I'll be joining you soon...
@Beth (and Nemo): Vineman...are we talking the full or half? You had me at Pinot.
Some winter training revelations: Slathering vaseline or thick zinc oxide sunscreen all over your face keeps the balaclava from freezing to it.
Vineman? Did someone say Vineman? That is 2 hours from here and it is the best bike course Eh-Ver! Done is the event a couple of times. I like to go up and ride that course for training rides.
I can organize post race day wine tours, etc. if a contingent comes West. I hear there are good wineries close in some podunk town and area called, uh, Napa Valley . . .I think?
And if I can entice even more, my wife can set-up back room private wine tastings, private barrel tastings and private tours. Way more fun than the touristy stuff.
Last nite (around 10pm) after doing the run workout I spent 1.5 hours chipping ice away (that had been building for a few days) on old 2nd hand car (217k miles on it) cause I needed to use early next morning.....does that count as a "brick" w/o?
@ Pete, since you posted in the rogue folder I say yes! Chipping ice that long requires a strong core to stablize the legs for good footing and an anchor for the forearm and shoulder workout.............all important when you reach that line during the IM...........I support you counting it as a brick........LOL
@ Dave H, I too am sick of this snow and crummy weather..........when is the madness going end?
Damn...glad I'm not up north this winter, but the payback will come in the summer. I did OS bike workouts on Tue and Thu, but went totally rogue today with 4 hours on the drainer. I used two Spinervals DVDs...Aero Base Builder VI (1 hr) followed by Tough Love (3 hrs). My legs are whooped! I'm starting to build the long rides in preparation for the Cross Florida Ride on April 3. It's 168.8miles...one day ride.
Another 4 hour LSRS (long slow roof shoveling) wko. House then garage. The garage was a BEATCH! No heat, so no melt and lots of snow. I was standing up there looking around the neighborhood thinking I should really appreciate the beauty of this but...
All through my teens and up to my mid twenties I did manual labor jobs. I have so much respect for people that do it their entire lives.
Anywho, the good news is the leak has stopped, the rooves are clear and the sun is out melting the remaining ice dams. Now, off to do Sat bike wko on Sun since I did Thur on Sat. Should be interesting.
me and Dave are wiped out. between the roof and our driveway, it's been a rough winter. Our neighbor is elderly so we get the whole thing to take care of.
the running joke is that we'll be ripped and built like linebackers by spring.
You hardy New Englanders should come down to sunny Va for some spring riding in the mountains. Mi casa et su casa.
Would LOVE to get up there to ride with you and Margaret before TOC. I gotta remember what a hill is before I land in Sacramento! Going up em is not my problem, it's coming back down!
Quick question for the the Rogue community. I have the opportunity to do a VO2 max and LT test at University of Colorado Sports Medicine campus on Thursday. Prior to testing you have to rest (i.e. no workouts for a couple of days before hand). I'm super curious about my numbers, for no real reason, other than I like concrete numbers. Is it worth taking a day, maybe two off from wko's to do the test, or should I bag it and just stick to the EN plan?
My initial thought is that we are so early into the season, that a couple of days off really shouldn't hurt me long term.

Nice work on the ice dams. Part of my business is disaster recovery and ice dams can jack up a house in a hurry.

@Dave ; - Rollerskating definitely counts! That sounds like lots of fun.
So, I'm just back from swim assessment. I'll get the full write-up later, but early findings:
1. I just need to swim faster. I probably left about half an hour on the IMWI because I was swimming stupid slow and could easily have swum faster.
2. My body position is good. Now, it is time to work on lengthening stroke and working on pull and catch.
Prescription: 2x masters practice and my 1:15 2012 IMWI swim time should be no problem.
Hooray! I'm not a hopelessly terrible swimmer! Now, it is just time to get to work. I'm looking forward to it.
Beth: IMWI 2012 you say?! I'm intrigued...

ARGH! Freudiantype! You know I go where the chicas vote to go. (Cough .. . Vineman? Cough. . . Vineman? Kitima - pinot.)

@John - That sounds like so much fun!
@Kitima, chicas. I'm rallying for the full.
Vineman is on my bucket list
Cedar Point or Vineman, either one works for me :-) John makes a compelling argument for California.
I'm growing tired of this rogue workout. Shoveling 4' of snow off the roof has me wiped out beyond belief. When did I get so old?
Bike may have to wait until tomorrow, unless I have the energy/desire to do it after cub scouts.
I picked a good winter to have not races to train for.
