Lodging

Still trying to figure out my accommodations.  Do most people stay in Placid or is it better to find something out in Jay, WIlmington, etc?

  • I still have not figured this out yet either. I need a place to stay for me and 3 family members. Suggestions welcome, I'd rather be out of town and not have to pay so much.
  • It certainly is more convenient to stay in town as driving in and out and parking can be a pain.  If you want to stay out of town a bit I would look toward saranac lake.  It is a pretty easy drive in from there and much better to get in and out from that direction on race day as you do not have to cross the course or any closed roads.

  • I voluntered at last years race and agree w/Chris that staying in town is super convenient, but expensive w/5 day minimum.  I was back up there last sept and got on a waiting list at a in-town motel (forget name).  I was 28th on list and w/in 6 wks got a call w/vacancies..  By now for in-town places your probably looking at getting on a cancellation list..  Personally, if it was just me coming to LP, I'd prefer to be out of town, but got in-town more for my folks - its a long day for them too and having a room close by will help them get thru the day....especially if its bad weather...(not that we will have bad weather image .

  • I found this site back in August. I booked a condo near the ski jumps thru this site. Looked at lots of other places, up near Wilminton, Jay and Keene. Not sure if there are any still availlable or not, but it may be worth a look.

My place is a 2 bedroom for 6 days - cost $1800. Right on the bike and run course.

  • I'm staying at the Maple Leaf Inn near the Swim Start...paying $150/night with a 5 night minimum. I'm honestly not expecting it to be that nice but that's what I found.
As I plan for, Gasp 2012, I will be looking at Lodging as one of the factors for signing up for LP again compared to a Ironman Wisconsin or CDA...
  • I agree with Chris - if you can't find something within your budget in Placid, Saranac Lake would be a good choice. It's an easy 8 mile drive west from Lake Placid. You can get in and out of Lake Placid fairly easily from that side. The center of Lake Placid can be near gridlock during peak weekends, and the day of the race roads in town and those leading into town from the east and north will be closed at various times during the day. You can avoid a lot of that mess if you are in Saranac Lake. That said - nothing would beat getting a place in town within walking distance to everything - but they will may already be very hard to come by at this point. Lock something in ASAP!
  • Is the weather generally favorable for camping? I may ask my family to rough it!
  • I found a 2 bedroom cabin at reasonable price on 86 just north of town! Glad to have found something! Whew...

If this information makes you very happy, considering buying me some coffee. My Starbucks card # is: 6051651854778533
  • I rented a cabin about 30 minutes outside of town. There was nothing available in the hotels or VRBO when I was looking a few months ago, so good luck!
