19 Weeks, how is it going?
I know this is the last week of the out season for lots of people so I imagine that a couple of easier weeks are a going to be a welcome change. I stopped pretending that I was doing the rest of the OS a couple weeks ago and have been feeling great about it.
Going pretty well here:
Managed to ride outside both Saturday and Sunday. Still too early but fun anyway notwithstanding 2 flats, ice jams across the roads etc. Nice part is that I managed to get out there in just under 40 degree weather and did not freeze. Need to crank up the duration but moving in the right direction.
The swimming is progressing well. I feeling better in the water than I ever have, nothing wrong with that.
Feeling good about running as usual. Need to up the volume a bit but nothing major.
Still can't decide if I want to go with Sram Red for the new road bike. I know lots of people love it but I have always been a shimano guy and fear change. Its gonna be Sub 16 pounds either way.

I myself did the Oct OS and a full 2 weeks of transition which actually felt more tiring than I thought since I added swimming in.
Swimming is going very well. Knocking out 2,000 meters about twice a week. Still stuck on the trainer and treadmill but I expect this to change very soon. VA weather is warming up. Now if they would just clear all the sand from the side of the road off.
Still doing lots of training but not totally stressed out about it. I'm saving that until 12 weeks out.
My big news is that I'm about to make a bike purchase. Headed to my local Tri Store (yes, I have one) to get fitted for either a Felt B16 or Cervelo P2. I'll base the decision mostly on comfort and fit. Hard to ignore the reviews of the Cervelo, but I'm going with fit.
Sorry I can't add an opinion for the SRAM Red or Shimano to help you out.
Happy training...
Swimming is progressing nicely. I went from barely being able to do 500 yds to completing the 1000 yd TT in 16:45 (just 1:00 off my best after almost 1.5 years of no swimming). I then swam another 1500 yds after, so I had some juice left in the tank.
I'm getting worried about my training as next week starts spring sports and I'm coaching one of the high school teams along with my 6 y.o.'s youth team. My hope is to get most of it in, but I'm worried about how tired I'm going to be. I may need some motivational help from y'all to help during that time. Reminding me I might die if I don't train for an IM is probably the most helpful.
@ Chris- I'm jealous of you being outside as I just can't be hassled to get all geared up for 40-50 degree temps. Do you use your regular tires in the spring or go with something that's harder and less apt to puncture?
Keith,
I went with regular tires but in full disclosure had a flat both days. The roads are crappy but I am pretty much done in the basement on the weekends. If I can get outside on the weekends I can deal with the brick mid week but can't do it all inside anymore. Been there on the 3:30 trainer rides. Not much fun.
Also racing Battenkill in a few weeks and need to get time in on the road bike and used to the cold. It could easily be cold/muddy/snowing for the race.
Oh and chances are you won't die but you might think that you want to...
Still recovering from the half marathon, but did 2 x 12' on the trainer today, at what I hope will be my new FTP. Tough. Tomorrow the normal Wednesday run, then bike test on Saturday. Will focus on swimming during the transition.
Oh - and I just got my new bike - a Look 576. Chris - I have some friends who rode the Battenkill ride last weekend, and are doing it again this weekend. Sounded messy.
Mentally I really wanted/needed a good final OS bike test, so I turned week 20 into a semi transition week. I just swam, stretched and rolled Mon, Tues and Wed. this week to be rested going into todays test which I will be doing in about an hour.
So my plans are bike test today, swim tomorrow, spend the day at the multisport expo at MIT on Sat. Run test on Sunday and have a full transition week next week. The week after that I will be doing a Big Bike Week, 6 days of 50-100 mile rides. I'll then take the weekend off or easy and start my 16 program into LP.
I am definately in a better place mentally and physically than I was last year for my IM training. The experience one gains from having a few IM training years under your belt is huge. Definately training smarter this year and it has definately paid off so far.
Can't wait to get out side and ride !!!!
