Race Week S/B/R events

I am arriving monday afternoon and my bike gets in sometime on Tuesday (TriBikeTransport).  With those in mind, plus the fact that I am expected to participate in family events to the max extent possible, I have this tentative S/B/R + Admin stuff plan.  What do you all think?

  • Sun: do the Tuesday bike and then pack.
  • Mon: Travel day.  Try to re-set body clock departing PHX so that I am on Kona time when I land.  If anything, I might go out for a 10min w/u run plus some strides.  Nothing more.
  • Tue: 30 min run.  Maybe swim if it will be low-friction with respect to family plans.  Get check-in accomplished.  At 4:00 my kids are doing the Keiki biathlon and then they are going to march in the parade  ("Wow!! That will be cool!"  -- all three kids).  Check out bike to make sure it works.  If possible find the Palani hill for recon.
  • Wed: Swim 30-45 min early morning.  Mid-morning bike up and down Hawi for roughly an hour.
  • Thur: Snorkeling trip with Family in the AM.  30 min swim / 30 min run.  (NOTE: lots of swimming b/c I can count on two fingers the number of ocean swims I have done.)  Maybe go to race briefing at 8:00
  • Fri: Team breakfast at 8:00.  20 min run "if I am going insane."  Bike check-in at 1:00 -- -window is 12-2:30 so I figure I should show up about an hour into it so less waiting in line.
  • Sat:  GET IT DONE!

What don't I have on the list?  A run in the Energy Lab.  Is that considered a Must Do?  If so, when would you recommend I do it?

Thanks!

EDIT -- TEAM DINNER changed to breakfast on Friday, also added family snorkeling trip to Thursday.

  • Joe looks good.

Comments: a couple of swims is a good idea. Ocean swimming is different that lakes. Try to do one practice at the time you will be racing. This is to experience the currents on the way back in. Plus get the morning light dialed in with land marks for sighting. Landmarks are a good backup for the buoys that you may not see at times due to swells.

The Palani hill is just 2 blocks up the road from the Event hotel at the swim start. Walking it up in the race is strongly encouraged, on the way back down, up to how the quads are doing.

Yes bike up and down Hawi. Target the same time you expect to be there on race day if at all possible. On your drive up you will make a turn to head toward Hawi, to your left you will see the coast if there are no white caps – the winds are not reflective of what race day could be. Hopefully you get to test on a normal windy day. I did my test ride and said – this is not bad. On race day it was a white knuckle ride like nothing I had ever experienced!!

Drive the marathon course (bike it if you have time to get a better feel for the hills), there are more hills than you may expect! Do a 30 min run out in the energy lab in the mid afternoon heat. This will get the head calibrated to the intensity of the sun and the heat radiation of the black background all around you. Just fit these in the week where logistics allow.

The family will love the snorkeling!!!!

    Joe enjoy the event!!!

  • Joe,

Plan sounds a lot like mine! Juggle kids and family stuff, get out when I can. I arrive Monday mid morning. Looking for a couple bikes and runs. Hopefully I can get in 3 or 4 swims. Talked with Patrick about meeting up Wednesday morning for swim and bike but haven't finalized plans.
  • Yes guys please keep me in loop re all runs bikes and swims! Liebs 215.565.5170
