little peeps-mtn IM course gearing question

I have run a compact with 50/34 and a 12-25 since 2005 and have done Moo twice and LP once with that combo but failed the no such thing as a good bike if your run then sucks test. I'm considering switching to either a 11-28 or 12-27. Reading Rich's post about his new 11-26 makes me wonder about the 11-28 but frankly my power range for the IM will be around 120-130 wts. I'm doing St George so currently three months out so not quite an academic issue at this point.

  •  Lynne,

That IMSG bike course looks to be tough enough without having to worry about gearing issues; with your projected power range I'd roll up at least a 27 on the back. You'll be mighty glad of it on the second loop.

  • I have a compact crank and rode IMWI in 08 with a 27 on the back. I was very happy with that combo, esp since my target watts for that race was all of 115!
  • another option is to pack two cassettes and a wrench and go on a scouting trip during race week to ride one or two of the bigger/more technical hills. Try riding it at goal watts with both cassettes and see which one you like best and use that on race day. image

  • For IMLP, I've run a compact and a 12-27. At that time my power range was around 120 watts. By the end of the second loop, I really wished I had just one more gear. I think for these hilly rides you can never have too many gears. If the 11-28 works well (shifting smoothly) with your drivetrain, go for it!
