EN Strava Club

A few folks discussed putting an EN club on Strava (free) on the dash board the other day and Coach R suggested we start a thread on it to see what peeps thought.  Either Coach P or R would start a club in their area and interested EN members who also use Strava could join.  I personally thought it would be fun just as another way to interact and keep each other motivated during the season.  I joined Strava during the summer and found it was really a motivator during rides (nothing like racing a total stranger on a completely random piece of road while you are all by yourself).  I don't really use it for much now since I'm back in the basement gearing up for the NOS, but I do upload my stuff every now and then and see what's happening around my favorite riding spots.

  • LOVE Strava! Would definitely join an EN group on it, although I am sure my outdoor rides will become less and less as the winter arrives.
  • I would definitely join an EN Strava group.
  • Ok, so:

    • I'll create the EN National club in God's Country, Monrovia, CA. Everyone who wants to play can join that. I'll keep it private for now and we can talk about opening it up? Or should it always be members-only?
    • Others can then create local (regional?) clubs: EN SoCal, EN MidWest, EN Whatever? How granular do we want it? Help me out here.
    • Would be super awesome if people changed their profiles names to highlight EN membership. For example, I'm Rich Strauss (EnduranceNation.us), I think, with the intent that locals will see me climbing up the KOM leaderboards, etc. Just something fun for me to do.

We can start simple like this and then use this thread to figure out new and fun things to do with it.

  • Just checked.... The club is not set up yet? image

Yes! I am totally down. I think Stava is totally fun and it is the best/easiest way to track my performance on all my favorite climbs and courses automatically. I am hooked.

Also - I just updated my handle to "Dino Sarti (Endurance Nation)"

Another thought - It should be for members. Consider Strava our "vacation haus"?

  • Handle now updated to "Dino Sarti (endurancenation.us).... It didn't take me 24 hours.... image

Gotta get on that bike unless you are taking KOM's on foot!

Oh! Snap! It is starting already.....
  • Name updated to include (EnduranceNation.us) as requested.

Patiently waiting for da' club to open up. (unless it already has and I just can't find it!) image

Can't wait to actually be able to TAKE some KOM's in Alabama after doing an official EN OS!!
  •  Ok, I created the club. I had to upgrade to premium to be able to make it a private club.

Please search for it using Monrovia, CA as the location and see if you need to request to join or can use the passcode of #workworks (with the hashtag) to join.

Let's try that vs me sending out email invites.

  • Bazinga. Request to join sent with the passcode.
  • Here's the direct link: http://app.strava.com/clubs/endurancenation-us-triathlon-team

Man, NOT intuitive to manage your own club. Doesn't show up anywhere in my profile, account, etc unless I'm just D U M B
  • Will you make a webcast about strava for beginners (or dummies)? I think I registered a few years ago, but never used it.

Will you make a webcast about strava for beginners (or dummies)? I think I registered a few years ago, but never used it.

    Sure, it's called google.com

Sorry, doode, this is totally a one-off, fun thing. I have zero time to show people how to use another website. Maybe one of the other members can do it.

  • Hey Ben - it's fairly simple once you get in and start using it. Not sure what you use for a "measurement device", but Stava supports Garmin files directly and other file types from your computer after you load them up.

Once loaded, you can review some of the details and save, share to Facebook or Twitter, or not. Click around and play with it - that's how I learned. You can hover over your name in the upper right corner and click on "My Profile" to add your bike, running shoes, change your name, birthday, privacy, etc.

As you go for rides, Strava will automatically compare you to other riders that ride the same "segments", which would be popular stretches of road that others created. KOM means you are the fastest rider of that segment. Regardless of your ranking, Strava will keep up with it for you. As you ride, you can also create your own "segments" and Strava will back fill data with anyone who has ever ridden that section of road in the past.

For runs, it will keep up with your fastest 400m, .5mi, 1mi, 5k, 10k, etc runs and tell you when you hit a PR, 2nd fastest, etc. You can also do run segments, although there aren't that many where I train.

I am by no means an expert, so others can chime in with more details that I have left out. But that should be enough to get you started.
  • @Ben - So easy a cave man can use it. Just login, connect your Garmin 500 and then upload all the files. Strava does the rest. It will take your rides and find the user created segments. From there it will rank your times on those segments versus other riders. It's all automatic.

The bummer for me is that we road a lot of the same courses before your move to O-HIGH-O. It will now show your times on those routes.

Beware - the upload is a little slow.

Remember - It can be that hard. Triathletes do it....
  • Pending acceptance, I'm in.

  • Accepting requests now...

I guess I need to get on my bike and ride it :-)
  • In!

Was suprised to see Roy posted trainer data.... that's really kewl!
  • It's asking me for a Passcode?

  • #workworks is the passcode.

    Just asked to join.
  • This looks like a man club... haha. Envious of you folks that ride outdoors this time of year- I'm too wussy to ride outside below 50'F (10'C for me). Sounds like fun!!
  •  No, we allow chicks in the club

  • @Steve, I upload all my data through poweragent software after each ride. I have my PA setup to automatically feed strava and trainingpeaks (including my indoor stuff).

But I will admit, indoor strava just isn't the same as sending a "Oh, No" email to some random stranger out there.
  • @ Roy - being in northern Maine, I don't expect to bike outside for the next 5 months.......

I joined not long ago and bulk loaded a bunch of rides just to get a feel of how it works. It made me realize I have a long way to go before I get any KOM titles..... Maybe by the spring...
  • @Roy - You have power agent (cycleops joule) auto load to TP and Strava???? Wow.
  • @Dino- Not exactly. I have a Garmin 500 for the bike. I use the poweragent software (free) for long term pc storage. As part of the upload process, PA offers the option to also upload into multiple different other locations (TP and strava being two of them). So I get my bike data downloaded across all of my virtual worlds in one connection.
  • Joined! Looking forward to it. I joined Strava a while back and watch Coach Rich and Dino but have never uploaded. Time to figure it out. We have a very active set of users in my area on local roads/trails.
