Pre-race Massage

I'm looking for thoughts on massage coming into the last few weeks before IMFL.  Namely how many?  Is a single massage good, probably better than nothing?  Should I get 1 per week leading into the race?  If I get 1 massage, what is the optimal time before the race?  A few days, a week, 10 days?  I look forward to peoples thoughts on the issue.

  • The answer depends. If you have never had a massage get one ASAP and see how you feel afterwards. You will probably feel pretty beat up for a day or two. Then decide whether 5-10 days will work. If it was me I usually leave to go to IM on Wednesday before the race. Tuesday would be the best day to see my massage therapist if I thought it out far enough in advance to set it up.
  • Agree with above - get one and see how long you take to recover afterwards, because depending on the intensity, you can be sore for a few days.

Last few weeks before a race day (mostly marathons for me) I usually get one per week. The last one I get before the race is more of just a "feel good" massage for relaxation where we are really not trying to solve anything or do any major work. I usually get that one 3-5 days before race day. You don't want to feel tired going into race day because of the massage.
