Carbon Bike Repair Example

A few months ago, I went down on my brand new Colnago C59.  The bike had two rides and 36 miles on it when I fell at the begining of ride #3.  The result was a bit of road rash, a new respect for downhill cornering and a broken top tube.  See the evidence below:

After doing some research and talking to many people, I sent it off to Calfee Designs in NorCal.  They seem to do the most repairs and work with all the manufactures.  They called this type of repair a level 4 - the most serious.  They took about 7 weeks and charged me $600 to fix it.  For another $400 they would have attempted to exactly match the ittle black on black design on the top, but I opted for just a clean simple matte black paint job.

The matte job they did was so clean that I wish I would have had them paint the whole thing.  I may still have it custom painted if I decide to rebuild the bike.  My company colors are white and green and a custome "Aloe Gloe" roadie could be fun next summer.

Here are a couple pics of the repair.  I could have tried to get a better one, but there is actually NOTHING to see.  The work is incredible!  The tube is quite simply healed.  My body still has more marks on it.  The tube is smooth, flat and perfect.  I am completly amazed.  The thing feels rock solid and is only a few grams heavier than when I sent it off.  Totally amazing!

If you are ever in need, I would highly recommend Calfee!

  • Wow! That is amazing Dino! Thanks for sharing. I always thought it would look like it was "wrapped" in the spot where they repaired it. Very cool that it looks seamless. You really should try to keep the rubber side down on that beautiful thing from now on.
  • An unbelievable job and pricy, not that I had anything to compare the price with except a car. I guess if you got the cash you can get anything fixed.

Looks good and be safe !!
