Wireless PowerTap Conversion

Hey guys. I currently have two wired powertaps. In an effort to clean up the wires on my bike and upgrade to a more technological headset, I want to move to a wireless powermeter. One option is to try and sell my wheels and use the cash to buy a quarq. But, then I'd be out of an 808 and would want to replace it. And I probably wouldn't get much for a 2007 velocity deep v wheel with a pt sl. The other option is that wheel builder can swap the internals out and convert the powermeters to wireless. This is more economical than buying a quarq, even with the money received if I sold my wheels (I think). Have any of y'all ever done this?  One concern for me is that this wouldn't be the newer g3 hub. I wonder how long cycle ops would continue to support the older technology.  Any clue?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

  • Several things to consider: Cyclops/Saris have an outstanding reputation for customer service; I doubt they will ever orphan any of their products as long as they remain in business. PowerTap hubs have a reputation for being rock solid, VERY easy to use, and easy to change batteries when needed.

Likewise, Wheelbuilder has an outstanding customer service orientation, with the added bonus that Coach R is very close to them, and can not only get us deals, but also rides herd on their attention to our needs.

Finally, I strongly suspect (although I don't know for sure) that the G3s are different from early generations only in the non power sensing mechanics - the hub, bearings, and shell, providing lighter weight, etc. I bet the electronics and quality of power sensors is unchanged (read carefully the differences between the G3 models and the Pro model on their website). The "technological" innards - sensors, firmware, and wireless transmitter - are probably all the same.

  • Jeff welcome to the team ya come to a good place I've learned a lot , especially from the guy above AL.

I was forced to move on to a wireless system as something went wrong with my hub and Cycle Ops didn't support servicing the older hub. You may be in that situation and not even know it, unless they were selling me a BS story.
Cycle Ops did offer me a wireless system for a nice discount because I did have a PT system. I forget but it was like a 1/3 off ...about. I suggest you call them. My local bike shop ( LBS ) took my 404 Zipp wheel and replaced the hub. Keep in mind you will need a new HR monitor and bracket to hold your LYC to your handle bars.

  • Jeff, Cyclops offered to rebuild my wired hub when I inquired a year or two ago. The cost was nearly that of a new hub. Afterall they replace everything but the shell including the axel, which goes from 12 to 15 mm. It was much cheaper in years past. I ended up getting in the last month a hopefully gently used SL+ hub to swap out. Hopefully this will go well for me? I've got an 808 too. I never thought of asking Wheelbuilder. Why didn't I ask her? I think that you have a great idea. I would do it if it saves you money and hastle. The G3 is not that big a deal IMO.
