30 miles or 30 minutes at the beginning of IM bike?

I thought it was 30 minutes before settling in to goal watts, but I heard Patrick say 30 miles on the weekly training podcast.  Which is it?

Comments

  • The race execution page in the wiki says 60-90', which would correspond closer to 30 miles (@ 20 mph) as opposed to 30 minutes. Except for maybe Patrick, where minutes and miles are closer to one in the same image
  • In my one Ironman, I was settled in a little after an hour. And by that point, I was starting to pass all of the riders who went hard at the beginning.

    Bryan-

Not sure which Podcast you are referring to but in the IM plans most of our warm ups are 20-30 min then we get into whatever the main set might be.

    example

    • WU-20-30 min @ 65% of FTP
    • MS:1 - 20 min@.95-100 of FTP
    • CD: 20 min@65%

Now during your actual RR and Ironman bike the first 30 or so miles are time to be Merry, eat, drink, and relax.  You may also see this in different places as gear one, gear two being your goal watts for the bike.

I hope that helps.  If you need anything else ask away.

  • Thanks all, that clears things up! Now I know for my RR on Saturday, 30 miles to enjoy the scenery!!
  • The wiki says 60-90 minutes. That's consistent with what was in the power webinar.
