Ironman Wales

I'm a newbie on this site.  Was wondering if anyone out there has signed up to do IM Wales?  I grew up vacationing with my family in the area and decided to do this as my debut IM.  Now living in MN, USA and would like to connect with anyone who has actually done this race or is planning to do it next year.

  • Never done it, but I heard it is a very tough course. Should be a heck of a debut! If you do it, I would like to hear about the logistics. I assume you might fly into Heathrow or Gatwick, then take a train out there, then get a car? Or maybe rent a van at Gatwick and drive? Is there a closer major airport that is supported with direct flights from the U.S.?
  • We will fly into Heathrow and then rent a vehicle. South Wales is a fairly easy drive from the West of London. Gatwick would work as well, its just a little further south and east along the M-25. Manchester is a bit more inconvenient. I have already booked a B & B about 50 yards down the street and around the corner from the start so that's taken care of! Now all I have to do is put in the bike miles - my weakest discipline.
  • No experience here for me...but you might find someone on our Facebook page if you don't mind posting there: www.facebook.com/endurancenation
  • I figured the rental cars would be too small to hold a bike and the family. I lived in England a couple of years and had a right hand drive Volvo and Mini. The Volvo would work but only if the bike were dismantled to some extent. My daughter was born in England so I'll be going back in a few years to show her around.

Best bet for insider information would be at tritalk.co.uk. I check those forums to see what the Brits say about European races.

We expect a full race rreport next year!
