If it rains, what shoes do I wear?

Question: I am running a HM on 11/11 and it is currently predicted to be raining steadily ( I know, a long way away) but here is my question: I train in Asics gel nimbus alternating with a lighter shoe Asics gel Blur. I run better in the Blurs, but know that that much rain will ruin them. Do I run in the nimbus as I don't mind throwing them away? I have a brand new pair of Blurs to start alternating after the race now that I have acclimated to them, so I would be running exclusively in Blurs which is my goal for marathon training. Anyone have an opinion? Thanks!

  • I run in Zoots...they have drainage holes. This goes both ways though, so when you run through a puddle, you get some water back. I have run them in some serious downpours and they just look cleaner when I am done, no need to toss them. K-Swiss makes shoes that drain too. You may not have time to break a new pair in, so I vote you go with the lighter of the shoes and see "if" they need to be tossed after they dry.
    Good Luck on your race!!!
  • I have never had a shoe be ruined by the rain... it has made them smell like wet dog (which can be fixed) but never ruined them. Living in Seattle it is pretty common that my shoes are soaking by the time I get back from my long runs because of surprise rain shower. My advice would be to run in what you are comfortable and confident racing in - which sounds like it would be the Blurs. If you get them cleaned off after the race (maybe rinse with clean water) and put them in a warm place with the shoe as open as possible, they will dry out and be fine in about a day.

Best of luck on your race. Embrace the rain and have fun!
  • Honestly, I don't know which shoe I'd pick but I'd vaseline the heck out of my feet.
