Shoes for upcoming marathon

Was looking for advice on what  sneakers to wear to upcoming race (Sunday).  I am 6'1" and weigh approximately 185.  I have been racing and training in Kinvara 3s.  After last 20 run felt stifness/discomfort in hips, knees and feet (not sure if this is normal after running 20+miles).  I decided maybe should switch to something with more stabiltiy/cushioning.  Recently purchased the Mirage 2,(monday), which is the stability version of the Kinvara.  The mirage 2 feel good but the concern is that I have not run over 5 miles in these shoes.  The difference in weight is about 2 ounces.  Should I stay with the kinvaras or make the switch to the mirages

  • Stick with what you have trained in.. Do not change to a new shoe at this late date. Even when it's the same model I like 35-50 miles in a pair prior to a marathon or IM.
Your thinking too much. Relax. Enjoy your race.
  • If you had over a month, I would say you can experiment with the new shoes but this close to the race. In your case, go with what you have trained in unless your Kinvaras are totally dead (no tread, holes in the soles etc). The kinvara is a good shoe. Pounding the pavement for 20+ miles makes everyone a little sore... I try to vary the terrain on my long runs and that helps.

Nothing new on race day! Enjoy the journey!
  • 3x on sticking with what you trained in.  It is much too late to change.  For a marathon, you want shoes that are broken in but not broken down.  Just enjoy your taper and your legs will feel better on race day.

  • x4 on what you trained in. Too late for something new.

I train mostly in Asics 21xx but do speed/hill work in DS Trainers. Recent races have been in the DS Trainers - minimum of 40 miles on them.

    Rest up and race well.
  • Good luck Sunday John you might find it a little overcast... hopefully the storm doesn't wreck your day. Remember your execution skills as you will want to kick it up in the beginning ... Don't... all the people that pass you at that point will come back to you.
  • Thanks everyone. Time to relax and get ready for tomorrow
  • So, did you use the Kinvaras or go to the Mirage. I am having the same thughts with IMAZ coming up and switching to the new Mirage that just came in over the weekend.
  • While replacing worn shoes with similar models would not bother me, I would be nervous about moving from a neutral, minimal Kinvaras to a stability shoe this close to race day. It could impact the entire way you hit each step and push off, working muscles and structure in different ways from the manner in which you trained.

P.S.  I just realized that this is a done deal.  Whichever way you went, I hope your race was a good one.

  • Stayed with Kinvaras. My feet were killing me by the end of the race. At points during run would crunch up toes to try get some relief
  • Definitely switching to mirage for upcoming OS
