Aero helmets that look reasonable

I saw the Kask helmet during the TdF and just saw Leanda Cave in the Giro Air Attack.  Are either of these helmets as fast (or nearly as fast) as the goofy looking helmets that so many triathletes wear?

  • Interesting. I noticed Andy Potts wearing the old Rudy Project Syton. Its in my closet as back up to my Wingspan. I would like to know more about that choice.
  • I use a Lazer Tardiz...its about in the middle of the goofy aero helmet scale, and the new ones have an attached visor. Just my $.02
  • Some of the pros racing Kona this year chose aero helmets with more ventalation due to the heat. Not sure about aero-ness though.
  •  Will probably get the giro air attack.   Kask too expensive.

  • You're wearing spandex, and worried if your helmet makes you look goofy?
  • "goofy" is in the eye of the beholder.... My wife and kids take one look and .... Behold..... Goofy!

Absolutely!  Reminded me of this comic:

  • Allegedly, Joe Friel did tests in the windtunnel of a bunch of aero helmets and found that most are very advantageous, but a couple are no different than road helmets. The research was never published, and I didn't see any information identifying which helmets were tested. I haven't seen any independent numbers on aero helmets, but if anyone has, please post. My guess is that most of the professionals either (a) have endorsement deals that commit them to wear their brand's aerohelmet; or (b) have absolutely no idea what helmet would save them time (i.e. Crowie before 2011).
And on the goofy front, you only wear the thing for races, and (maybe) race rehearsals. Embrace the dorkiness of wearing something that looks like a gigantic sperm!
  • Rudy project Syton without the ear covers is the one no better than a regular helmet. Most others are worth roughly 60 seconds over 40k. Differences from one to another are very small, even in the data published by manufacturers (see data in RP Wingspan presentation). Conclusion: pick one you like, that's comfortable, and don't over-think it.
