The February Catch-Up Crew: Week One
Down, but NOT out!
Hey everyone! Welcome to February!
Per the Injured Athletes Thread, it's time to try to get back in the saddle... if you can, that is. If you can't, keep in touch for mojo and healing thoughts!
I hope you're all feeling stronger and as anxious to put your injuries behind you as I am (or at least find some good work arounds)! Speaking of workarounds, Tomer let me know (as did the coaches) that if you can't run, it's cool to sub another bike choosing one of the week's interval workouts and dropping to Z3 as needed. Some folks are pool running, too. Do what you can do!!!
Sending out good mojo to my fellow catch up club crew members! I'm gonna start week 3 on the bike (3x10s) tonight , and add a bike for one of my runs again this week... and I hope to try my hand (literally) at starting the week 1 run schedule next week.
Good luck!

For me the cortisoanoe shot I got last week I think is working. Sore for a few days at injection site where the hamstring tendons insert on tibia. Last night sitting in hot tub after my swim, realized, that area does not hurt, put some pressure on it, nope, no pain.
The down side is that my right leg is pretty weak compared to the left. need to get that stronger.
Did this Cybex arc trainer thing last night for about 20 min, kind of like an elyptical. have to get on my bike though for today. Missed a bunch last week " resting my knee"
Gonna miss another week going to Haiti, leaving later this week.
The only thing that was injured on me was my motivator . Just needed serious down time after IMAZ. I did the week 2 workout today and will just that next week. (working off the Jan OS schedule)
Nemo- glad you are back in the saddle
Tracy- look @ ;the "down" time in Haiti as more healing time
Becky- nice to meet you!
Becky, what you are doing in Hatit has got to be so much more important that triathlon training. I know we all have our goals but this is a hobby of luxury. Props to you for going to help out!!
I'm on Week 2 of the January OS as well and am not going to test until my tri club does an indoor time trial later in the month. Then I'll use that for my new FTP score.
Just back from my Wed intervals !!! OUCH. I have just have to remember they are over quickly
I'm going to start my running here...but not with a Vdot test just yet. Wanna make sure I can actually run more than 0.5 miles at tempo without hurting myself.
Welcome back to the land of training, friends!
OK- so here's my plan guys. I'm going to make this a bike focus time since I'm now cleared to bike but can't run. I'll be biking along with you all (I'm re-starting the OS Week 1 this week) on Tues/Thurs/Sat. But while your running on Wednesday I'll be either pool running or swimming and while you run on Sunday I'll be biking. Got it? I'm so glad to have a few others here to 'restart' the OS with! Thank you all for coming along for the ride!
You guys rock!
Tracy, good luck in Haiti - I think it's fabulous that you're going. What will you be doing there! Send our best to everyone you help!
Gina, nothing wrong with taking some VERY much deserved down time after IMAZ. Congrats on the finish... I'm shooting for my first IM in November (IMFL). Welcome! (and it's nice to meet you, too)
Kitima, I am sort of doing the same with the run... I've been running 20 minute stretches about a week or so now. I don't miss those intervals, but I know I need them!
Nemo - good news! and welcome back! you'll be back at it in no time!
As for my update, I started week 3 of the bike last night. 3x10s - ugh! Unbeknownst to me (while I was catching up on tivo'ed shows) while I was biking it started snowing (and sticking)... which messed up my morning plan of getting to the gym for a jog/elliptical session. Fortunately we had liberal leave and when the sidewalks were cleared I headed to my local gym and did 30 minutes total on the treadmill (a new post surgery record) and then 20 on the elliptical! It wasn't fast, but I'm getting my running legs back and trying keep my shoulders loose and my hand relaxed. I'm hopeful I can start the running OS week 1 next week (unless the coaches have other thoughts on how I can work running back in even though I'm 4 weeks behind my biking). I'd like to try another 30 mintue run Sunday followed by 20-30 minutes kickboarding with a few laps of free thrown in if my hand feels good.
Becky- I did IMFL '08 as my first IM. GREAT experience!!!
Marianne- good on the piriformis!
Saw my doctor today and he is now allowing me to ride my real bike (yeah, I don't have to ride that silly recumbent unless I want to), and to start running - 3 times a week for 3 weeks to see how it foes and keep it to about 2 miles. Soooooo, I went straight to the treadmill at the gym and did 4 x 1/2 mile runs at a very easy pace with .1 mile walk between. NO pain, it was so great... He has basically said forget about the race I was going to do at the end of April, but reminded me that I do have the rest of my life.
Since I have been on the recumbent since November, and pretty erratic the last couple of weeks, and not wanting to really start completely over, I am going to go back to week 2. I also have several cross country ski races in the next coupe of weeks so that seemed to make sense. My thought is to do the bikes, run as I can and do the intervals in the pool (deep water running.) I will run that past RnP for sure.
Best of luck to everyone. I personally know how difficult it has been for each of us and you have been a real inspiration.
Dave
Dave: You get the OS Tenacity Award for riding those intervals on a recumbent since Nov! As for the running intervals in the pool (I've been doing those since Nov), might I suggest getting a waterproof case (like Otterbox) for your iPod. It really helped me not lose my marbles while pool running.
So I thought I'd try running some intervals yesterday...Well, the trails were covered with 3-4 inches of fluffy snow. I had my screw shoes which were fine for Epace, but no traction at all for anything faster. Next time I must remember to bring the snow shoes! What I should really do is suck it up and get on a dreadmill.
Thursday Pain Cave session done!! Rollin, rollin, rollin...
Way to go Gina!!!!
OK, folks, I'm so excited that I'm just jumping out of my skin right now!!! I went out for a ride on my bike today!!! It was 38 degrees with winds North at 15mph but I didn't care, I was going OUTSIDE and RIDING MY BIKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My goal was just to have a good ride with 2 intervals at ABP and see how my legs felt. I'm 'restarting" the OS from the beginning (but not testing) and I'll be ready to start trying some real workouts with intervals next week. With the wind coming from the north, that means my ride was going to be first 1/2 with the wind at my back, and second 1/2 with the wind in my face. It was just AWESOME!!!!!!! I love my bike!!!!
Wow, Nemo, that's great - your excitement came through and got me excited, too! Right now outdoor biking, regardless of weather isn't an option since I can't close my hand, so I will live vicariously through you!
I couldn't drag myself out of bed to do my bike intervals this morning so I'll play catch up tomorrow... it's my work from home day so I can get it in during lunch. And ride again Saturday and do a 30 minute jog on the dreadmill, maybe I'll try to pick up the intensity a bit to see if I'm ready for the 5k test/kickboard Sunday.
You guys are really helping me get my head back in the game even if my hand isn't cooperating.
vdot test on Wednesday. After 5 weeks of no running i hurt. Plus vdot was just a tad lower. oh well. Ankle felt good.
@Paul, good news that the ankle felt good... I took a bunch of time off running myself and am easing back - hoping to do the 5k test this week. I'm dreading how painful (and slow) it will likely be... but that just means there's lots of room for improvement!
@Nemo, I know you posted to a different thread, but your joy was simply infectious! I thought of you and how happy you were to be training while I was on the spin bike and couldn't help but be happy myself. I was going nuts at the thought of being snow bound!
Despite snowmageddon in DC I managed to get my workout in yesterday... ordinarily it wouldn't be a problem to bike in the pain cave, but I don't have 4WD so I've been at the beau's place. He was a superstar and dug his SUV out and got me to the gym ( which was open)... I did the intervals on a spin bike and was able to do the brick (sort of ... only did 10 minutes on the treadmill... ).
I plan to go back today to get a 30 minute jog in followed by some pool time doing kick board work!
Next week I'll be on week 5 of the bike and starting week 1 of the run.
Hope everyone is warm and safe (with power)
