Training device for run

I currently have a Garmin 310xt that is having problems with screen and some functions. Also, the strap is broken and cannot be repaired. Looking for advice on what you are using these days. Heard the Garmin 910 is good. Others?

  • Joe - Are you looking for a multi-sport watch, like the 310 and 910 or a pure running watch? I can't speak to the former, but if the latter, I love my Garmin Forerunner 210. Tells me everything I need on the run (pace, distance, HR) and afterwards I upload it to Garmin Connect where I can see what I did (incl. map). The only two drawbacks are: 1) it's not waterproof so you can't shower with it; b) you can't upload wirelessly via USB stick, instead you use a USB cable, which you also use to recharge the battery. Other than that, I love that thing.
  • Joe,
I have an old 305 for run training and use it purely for that now that I have power on the bike(I had it paired with a speed cadence sensor on the bike before I had power). I think you could get away with just a pure GPS/HR watch if all you plan on doing is running with it. I like the idea of the 910xt as a "back up" power display on the bike for 70.3 and IM distance(this is my next purchase on the wish list). I guess it just depends on what you want to use it for.
  • Joe,
I have the garmin 910XT and love it. Take a look at this in depth review of the 910XT and check out much more on this site.

  • 910x one stop shopping does all SBR and even pool laps...
  • If you want a "running" watch. Take a HARD look at the Garmin 610. It is the grand champion, top-o-the-line running watch. 305's are getting harder to come by. Last I checked you could find the occasional remanufactured one, but those are getting few and far between. I could be wrong, it was some time ago that I last looked. Garmin makes cheaper GPS running watches, but the 610 is pretty slick....

910 is GREAT watch, but I don't think it rides that well. It does not have as many fields as the Garmin 500 and you cannot use any of the lap features if you are using multi-sport mode. When in multi-sport mode, if you hit lap, it will change to the next sport or transition.
  • My Garmin 405 is on it's last legs. It's 4 1/2 years old and is getting harder and harder to recharge. I'll probably follow Dino's advice and get the 610. I heard great things about it from other sources. 910 is overkill for me. Heck, my go to watch for an Ironman and for swimming is my plain old Timex Ironman. It does everything I need. If I'm blowing up on the run, I don't need a Garmin to tell me that...I can FEEEEEL it.

Um, why are you showering with your HRM? Well. . . maybe we don't really want to know. . . .

  •  Constantly checking in with my heart...!

Just kidding, but I usually wear my sports watches all day, so with the FR 210 I just have to remember to take it off before I shower and then put it back on.  I know, the extra step is killingme

  • 910 is great (I have one) but expensive. Chief advantages over the 310xt are (a) swimming, and (b) TSS/NP/etc calculated on board. Secondary advantage is smaller file size so quicker uploads. I have an older Edge device that I use as my "visual" computer for my bike rides, but I wear the 910 and upload the data from my 910, just because of the latter reasons. But I agree, if you want a straight running watch, there are cheaper options out there, too...but the good ones cost about the same as a 310, which I have seen as low as $250.
  • Regarding the inability to use the lap functions on the 310XT or 910XT during automultisport, yeah, it's a bummer. That being said, you can always program the autolap functionality for each sport. I have the run and bike set up to automatically record laps by distance so I can go back later and analyze what happened if I so choose. I also set the bike portion up to have an alarm every 30 minutes to remind me to eat or take electrolytes during HIM and longer stuff like centuries and fondos.
