Hell of Hunterdon

http://hellofhunterdon.com/

This looks like a doable race this season. I was looking it over and the site suggests to ride a bike with greater than 23 MM tires. As I ride with 23 MM what is the next size up I could use on a road bike ?

Has anyone done this race before ?

  • David - that looks like a great ride. I would think that the tire width you could use will be determined by the spacing on your fork and seatstays. Perhaps your LBS could tell you.
  • Do you have/can you borrow a cyclocross bike? Grand Bois makes very supple and fast 32mm 700c tires that would be perfect for this event.

  •  A number of EN'ers did this last year...including myself and Coach P...if I can find the link to Coach P's report will post it...there is a forum thread I think it is in the Northeast section....

Very Hilly and the unfinished road sections are challenging if you are not used to them...I did this on my roadie with normal tires....I believe most others did as well............last year was brutally cold and wet.

Others who did this and are more bike/wheel savy can probably add more....but the wider tires are not necessary as the total time on unfinished surface is minimal compared to the total mileage of the ride.

  • I did this last year on road bike with cheap 25mm tires I got from nashbar. No flats but it's a challenging course. Good prep for battenkill.
I wrote a little race report for it you can find it right after coach p's report.

Signing up again this year, it was an epic day with the cold wet weather but well worth it.
  •  Coach P's HoH report and discussions -Attillas report is in the same forum.

  • Thx.

@ Bill, no cyclocross bike availabile for me.

Wonder if my road bike with tire liners would work. I'd hate to buy tires just to use them 1 x year.

Joe, Thx for the post too.
  • I would go with 25s....or wider if you can. I rode 23s and spend 18 very scary minutes sliding all over NJ....in retrospect I only really lost time to folks on these sections....it's on my short list for 2013 if I can swing it!
  • THX, I don't need scary time on the bike. :0
