Active.com attempting to cash in on Ironman DNS rate?

Check this out, landed inbox today.

Registration Protector, basically insurance to help you get your money back if you have to bail on a race. Actually, I don't know if this will be offered at online IM reg, I just thought it was interesting.

  • Everything else comes with tack-on insurance policies these days so I guess this shouldn't come as any real surprise, nor is it really any more or less distasteful than it is for the myriad of other services and products that insurance is offered for.

However, pay close attention to the list of covered reasons that will be accepted when a claim is submitted. They cover some very important ones such as sickness or injury, but not perhaps one of the most common reasons, that you simply changed your mind or changed your season plan and would like to do one race instead of another.

And finally, I didn't see anything on there that actually said how much of the entry fee was covered by this insurance. All of it, some fixed percentage? May have missed it, but didn't see anything specifically mentioned.
  • I wonder if you have to provide a doctor's note if you bail for injury? I hate Active.com and their percentage mark-ups. They don't do any more work if you sign up for a $25 5K or a $600 Ironman, yet you get gouged so much more for the high cost events. I'm hoping there competitors keep them in check, or better yet, put them out of business.
  •  In the long run, self-insurance is cheaper, otherwise ins. Companies would go out of business. So if you're an IM lifer, doing 1-2 a year, not a good bet. Doing just one or two, maybe worth it, especially the older one gets.

  • FYI...Allianz Global Assistance (previously Access America) is the same company that offers travel insurance, mostly via the airline booking sites. I've used them several times for airfare.

The terms and conditions (T&Cs) are very specific for the travel insurance, IMO, and exclude most of what would happen to us as a normal traveler - including "training or competing in an amateur or professional sport", so I'd like to see the T&Cs of this insurance.

Further note that these T&Cs are state-specific based on individual state laws/mandates, etc.
  • Note Active.com is partly (mostly?) owned by Mike Reilly (yes, THAT one)....no strangers to Ironman...
  • So while standing outside of transition waiting to be marked at IMFL, one of the lead people instructing the volunteers remarked that there were over 3200 people signed up...Just under 2600 started. Can you imagine if on a freak year, all those people actually showed up..
  • There is historically a 10-15% DNS race at these events. IMFL and AZ may be a bit higher, due to the length of the season for these races.

  • Interesting side note, as I purchased tickets for a March 2013 concert just now, the company mentioned above, Allianz Global Assistance, is now offering "concert insurance" as well.

They seem to be cornering the market on 'event insurance' (at least in my world of travel, tris and live music).
