Head Lamps reccos

So we moved to this beautiful neighbourhood in Seattle that in fact is pretty rural. No street lamps. Any recommendations for head lamps and other safety wear?

  • I use this one for my bike and often ride in the early AM in the dark.  Works GREAT!

And don't forget the rear light.  This is the one I use:

  • The fuelbelt head lamp is good for running --northern lights one
  • Ha - Welcome to Seattle! I run with this one. LOVE IT. See many critters I'd otherwise miss and cars move into the OTHER lane. I think they figure something bigger is coming at them so they'd bet move over. I'm lit up like a Christmas tree from front an behind and the beam is super adjustable yet steady. Good luck!

  • Just running or riding too? Running I like the Pretzel ligh from REi. For riding try the nite rider. Get the best one you justify spending on based on forecasted use. Also, plus 1 on the tail light.
  • Dino, just running. Like Jenn I am on a trainer in the winter for biking, but I like to run outdoors at 6am. 7 am feels waaay too late.
  • I use the Black Diamond Sprinter. It is rechargeable, has a built in flashing red light on the back of the strap, is incredibly bright, and has different modes. The best I have used (and I own many headlamps) and in Reach The Beach I had many jealous teammates.

For nightwear I realy like the Amphipod Xinglet Flash Led. It is very reflective, and has built in front and rear flashers.

I also wear the Vizio Vest by Saucony.

I do a lot of running in the dark, and I have bears in my neighborhood.

  • I like these LED vests for running as well as assisting when biking in the dark. They are very light-weight. It throws nice light forward, so I can see step hazards, and is red on the back. I don't wear a headlamp. Everyone can definitely see you when you are wearing this vest...

  • @ Jane - I have a Princeton Tec headlamp.  They make many styles and I have the "Fuel" version.  Very light weight, bright (70 lumens) and has a swivel so you can change the angle of the light.  Also can set it to be a blinking light.

I also have 2 Brooks Nightlife magnetic LED flashing lights.  They hold on to your clothes by magnets and blink bright red.  Attach one to the front of your jacket and one to the back, and people can see you for miles (well maybe not miles but at least a 1/2 mile).  I got them last year when I ran the Hood to Coast relay and each runner was required to wear blinkers for the night legs.  They worked great in the race and I've used them numerous times since then with no malfunctions.

  • x2 on Fuelbelt stuff, besides there's a team discount.... image
