Sweat test: do I really need thaaaat much?

Weighed nude befoire run at 185.6.  Ran indoors in A/C controlled room on TM for 90 minutes.  Drank 24 oz of Gatorade.  Weighed nude after peeing at 179.6.  Net loss 6#.  4#/hour after drinking.  Do I really need to drink an additional 64 oz per hour?  That would be 4 oz every 4 minutes?  Or, is my math off?  Thanks.

  • David, that's 5 x 24oz. that you sweat/peed out in 90 minutes or just over 3 bottles per hour. A pretty high sweat rate, but it wouldn't surprise me at all especially if the room gets warm/humid or if you are running without a fan. Of course, a lot depends on your pace, too. I generally plan on 48oz./hr. indoors on the bike, and I'm only 160Lbs. I sweat more on the run and can't keep up with my sweat rate without making rest stops to drink. FWIW.
  • IMO you should sweat test in race conditions --- that means the same environment , course , temp , humidity ,and race pace intensity to get an accurate reading of what to expect for your race!
  • I had my test too and sent the results off to Core Diet as I purchased the racing and fueling plan.

Their response back to me was quite surprising as I was not told to resupply all that fluid per their plan. Their plan , I should say, told me to take so many Gu's per 1/2 hr switching to Shot blocks per time/distance and drink Gatorade/perform throughout the races without the emphasis on Gallons per hour but gauge through peeing.

I believe the idea is to refuel with the correct amount of sodium and electrolytes that keeps you going without bonking.

    Make sense ?

So if you resupply the content lost via water you would just end up with a belly full of water sloshing around without your body absorbing it as your body needed the electrolytes/sodium per hour to keep going.
  • I don't think that 100% replacement is the goal. Especially on the run. But it is also most likely influenced by the duration/intensity of the event.
I will put in an unsolicited plug for the core diet fueling plan. I noticed a huge difference from the first time I put their plan in place on a saturday ride. And race day was a massive improvement.
Of course, I might have just been doing it really really wrong before...
  •  @ Jimmh - which Core Diet plan are you using?  I'm considering using them for next year, but for races only - or do you recommend incorporating them more in training and general nutrition? txs
