NGP

My brain is fried so somebody tell me.

I did an 18 mile race with a NGP of 9:09 and just finished a marathon with a NGP of 8:55. The pace for the 18 was 9:21 the marathon was 9:50.

So is that to say I worked much harder in the marathon or the course was harder ?

What does your body tell you? Was there a difference in elevation per mile between one race and the other? What about your  HR at the end of eac race? Considering those issues may help you understand the NGP variance.

  • the body feels like I did a marathon , can't really compare the 18 to a 26 on feel as the last 8 miles is a large difference. the elevation was way different with the marathon having some nice long graded inclines and the 18 was at the beach so it was flat. I did not use a Hr monitor either.

This accounts for the difference. NGP is designed to "flatten out" a course, telling you what you "would have run" if the route had been flat. As you can see withe the result from the beach, it's not really that good. In my experience, it tends to overshoot on either. It's a fun, but not reallu usable metric , IMO.

  • Hummm. Interesting thx AL
  • I agree with Al, just anecdotally from experience. NGP is supposed to be the analog to NP. Both are imperfect, but NGP more so.
  • Thx, Prof I was post marathon that day and didn't want to think " what it all means "....
