Early Pre-workout Breakfast

My job has changed it's hours which means to me I need to get up that much earlier to do my workouts.

I don't have a problem getting up earlier and doing a bike or run, as I know how to fuel up for that, however looking forward to getting back in the pool not so much.

So I'm looking to get up walk the dogs grab a little something to eat brush the teeth and scoot over to the pool.

That looks like 1hr 15m max from the time my feet hit the floor to jumping in the drink.

I'm looking for fueling suggestions. Biking and running fuel is a lot different for me as I'm in a vertical position with swimming the opposite and I don't want something heavy or solid but something that perks up my depleted glycogen stores with some caffeine.

Ideas ?

  • I personally can't have anything other than maybe half a cup of coffee or a 5hr Energy and a Gu for that amount of time. Anything more and I feel it coming back up.
  • If its going to be an 1-1.5 hrs before i start my swim I like 1 coffee with 2 dates or a banana right after I get up. Then a caffeinated gel right before I start. Drink NUUN while in pool. Recovery drink for after with about 500 calories in it and call that breakfast. If I'm going to swim right away I just do coffee, swim, then eat a breakfast!
  • Something small and quick, maybe a banana, gel, some fig newtons or toast with jam and then sports bottle on deck. You have great willpower I can never do swims early in the morning, just the thought of getting in the pool so early is not for me.
  • I agree with Tim's note. I believe the core diet protocol is a gel 15 minutes before, and then 30 mins in.
  • Applesauce seems to be the popular answer these days! I tried it for the first time before my swim yesterday and it worked great for me. Anything solid in my stomach tends to "repeat" on me (ie - I burp it up like crazy) as soon as I get horizontal. The applesauce was a great solution. It even comes in little "to go" packets that you can squeeze out like a gel (stole them from my kids!). Downside is that they only have 3 oz each....
  • +1 on taking in a gel

  • I commute to work on my bicycle in the early morning. I burp alot if I eat carbs for breakfast. I can get to work fine on cereal or a bagel, but it doesn't feel great. I feel great if I eat a protein breakfast. One egg and a couple of slices of turkey and I can get to work in record time. I'll usually have a clif bar an hour or so later.
  • Only 1 mention of protein? Really?

I am like a robot and have the same thing everyday and would recommend some protein to start the fires in the AM. Protein will give a satisfied feeling and help your post workout recovery and muscle building.

For a swim workout, I would do 1 scoop of either egg or casein protein powder mixed with water and a slice of toast. Only put sugar free jelly and or a peanut butter substitute on the bread. These are the carbs. This will give you 200-250 easy to consume, keep down and process calories with 25-30 grams of protein to fend off hunger pangs during your work out. Give it a try!

Here is an interesting article from Training Peaks about we are so hungry after the swim. It sort of makes sense that the primitive parts of our brain want to store fat when we are in cold water.

I have found the pre-work protein works for me in keeping mid to late workout hunger in check.
  • Gu Chocolate Outrage

@ Jess , never NEVER thought about apple sauce..... I did the marathon without so much as a FART with that plan .... and Happy Thanksgiving !!! to you and John image

@ Dino and Aaron , as always you the best .
  • Scoop of protein in glass of h2o. Power bar while drinking perform. Gel 15 minutes prior. Perform during.
  • @David. Was out at my son's soccer game so couldn't make it down sounds like it was a good time. Funny that you guys were at Irish Mile, that's about 3 minutes from my house since I live in Westmont.
  • Little late to this thread, but... When I swim I'm usually in the water within 15 mins of my alarm going off, so I almost always swim on nothing more that a few sips of water. Very occasionally I will have either a half a bottle of Gatorade or maybe a gel if I know it's going to be a long one.
  • @Nigel - where was that protocol mentioned?
