Garmin 610 users -- do I need it?

Arrrgh, i've been so good about not going overboard on Black Friday/Cyber Monday, but amazon has the 610 for $300 vs the normal $400 ... I currently have a 210, which I like, but it's a refurb model (the original just went kaputt after one year), and is really slow to pick up the satellites, so i'm wondering if it's time to upgrade before it breaks right before a run test...  My main and only gripe w/ the 610 is its lack of waterproofness, so I couldn't put it on at the begining of a tri and be done with it, would need to be a t1 or t2 item (i have the edge 500 for bike), and I'd still have no idea of overall s+t1+b+t2+r time (for my first IM, I just used a regular timex and hit start/stop).  And I just can't handle the bricks that the 310/910 are on my dainty little wrist... So, those of you who have this gadget, what say yee??

  • Oh go for the wrist brick..... wear it like a badge sayin' "Look at me, I am a serious triathlete who cares more about data than fashion"

Besides, it will make your arm stronger from having to lift the extra 17 grams (totally made that up)....
  • Plus the 310xt is only $210 on Amazon right now image
  • Did I mention my girly wrists?? Plus, I'm not sure I can handle the 'data over fashion' mantra just yet...

  • I use the 610 and really likely , but I only use it for runs. Which means I am wearing it 3-5 times per week. When I race, I roll the 910 for all there aspects. The 610 is great if you want to wear it like an "active lifestyle" accessory. The battery is good enough that you could use it as just a watch. I don't generally make that choice, but I have. Runners will take note and I have gotten a few compliments wearing it.

Short of that choice, there really is nothing it does above and beyond the 910. My issue with the 310 is that it will not support the garmin footpod and it has limited metrics on the bike. Meaning, it didn't get all the Training Peaks metrics like the other top end devices this year (edge 800/500 and 910)
  • @ Dino - I have the 310xt and use a footpod all the time - especially the deadmill. No issues for me. But you are correct about no advanced power metrics.
  • I just went thru this decision making process, and for the extra $50 I went with the 910xt - where I can use outside and in the pool.
  • @Steve - thanks for the clarification. I have never used a 310, but thought is wouldn't support the foot pod. I actually bought my 610 because of the footpod issue and the pending release of the 910.

    Sorry for the misinformation.
