Forum Search help

As I have been following the discussions on this forum, I am very impressed by the quality and volume of information available.  My problem lies in going back at a later time to reference the information that I have seen.

Many times I remember the suggestions/recommendations (sometimes even the member posting), but when I go back to find the thread, I am stumped by the limited search capabilities of the forum.  Or, more commonly, the conversation has been buried in the dashboard somewhere.

Does anyone have a suggestion to either search better (such as: see all postings by individual members, and/or search content within posts), or have a simple personal catagorizing system they use to save information so as to not repeat questions already answered?

Thanks,

Ian

  • I do a couple of things.

The search function is OK, but I find you really have to know what you are looking for.

For some threads I'll click on the "Check this box to subscribe to this topic" at the top of the thread. It gives you you updates as new information is posted via email. I'll keep at least one email in the thread so I can pull it up to remember a thread if it's been a while.

I also use Evernote and have the "Web Clipper" plug-in installed, so I can just take a snapshot of the page with title and other information and I tag it as EN. I can then go up to Evernote, select posts with the EN tag and browse until I find what I'm looking for. Once I know the title and form, going back to the Forums and searching is easy.
  • Another tool is right above on this page clicking on unanswered or not read and active topics. And I agree the search function isn't like Google by no means.
  • Thanks guys. The evernote suggestion is brilliant. I use that program for other tasks, and really like it, but didn't think to apply it to this scenario. Thanks for the suggestion!
