RE: Gluten/Soy Free Protein Powder?

I'm looking for a recovery protein powder to substitute for my usual glass of chocolate milk every now and then...  I want something that is Gluten Free, Soy Free, and does not have any artificial sweeteners.  I've come across a few - Vega Sport, Living Harvest, and Sun Warrior...   Any suggestions or experience with these?

  • The studies demonstrating that choco milk is the "best" recovery drink were tenuous at best and those claims have been dis proven (at least from what I have read), so it's good that you are investigating alternatives. I really, really enjoy all the Vega products and use them extensively. The Vega Sport has been really good in my experience but I admit that I have never trained for an Ironman while using it, so my experience may be a little different.

There's also the option to make your own. I would recommend you read Thrive by Brendan Brazier or even the web since there are so many recipes to check out. This is a decent one to start with http://www.nomeatathlete.com/post-workout-recovery/ but there is so much more out there on the Internet, books, etc.

Whatever you do end up trying, please let us know how it turns out.
  • http://www.gardenoflife.com/Products-for-Life/Foundational-Nutrition/RAW-Protein.aspx I've been using this and I like it. Also use just hemp seeds. Not a fan of the Vega products and I have tried several times.
  • I use the recovery protein mix (chocolate) from Generation UCAN. It does have some Sucralose in it but it is worth it in my mind. The protein is whey protein and the carbs come in a slow release form that keeps your blood sugar rising high enough to trigger insulin spikes. The high glycemic sugars in chocolate milk give you what you need but you'd be better off keeping insulin low.
  • I use Hemp protein powder from "Manitoba harvest" (order online), but many health food stores carry hemp protein products. Hemp is a very complete protein (amino acid sequence wise), very hypoallergenic (I'm gluten/casein/soy free), and loaded with good EFA's. I work with many patients who have food sensitivities and/or autoimmune issues, and hemp protein works well as a supplement. And if you don't have any experience with hemp protein, NO there is no THC in it image
  • I use peanut butter or peanut butter in powder form sometimes as well as chia seeds. Not sure if you are trying to avoid dairy altogether, but plain greek yogurt is also a great protein option for smoothies.

  • Thanks everyone! I picked up some Sun Warrior over the weekend and I'm really looking forward to trying it out. I had no idea that hemp was such a quality protein! Really appreciate everyone's input!
