Trainer Problem

I have a Blackburn Ultra trainer and have experienced the following problem lately - I'll be riding along at a fairly constant cadence (say 90-100) in a constant gear at a constant power and for no reason that is apparent to me the resistence on the trainer spikes - to the point where I have to let the wheel stop (cannot hold the cadence and if I try the power gets over 400 before I give up).  After "resetting" it will work for a while and then same issue.  In my last FTP test I had to let the wheel stop 5 times over the 2 20min intervals.  It's more annoying than anything else.  I've emailed Blackburn customer support with no response.  Any ideas?  Time for a new trainer?

  • Description of the trainer is

The Trakstand Ultra features Blackburn's patented Centriforce resistance unit with a centrifugal clutch for an amazingly smooth, silent and progressive resistance that feels just like a hard road ride. Unlike magnetic and fluid trainers that lose speed quickly, the Centriforce system has a smooth rollout when coasting so your pedal stroke feels more natural in the dead spots, or when you ease up on the pedals.

I'd say that it sounds like the mechanism is broken.  If you get no love from Blackburn, call the shop where you bought it.  If no love there, I'd say yes, it sounds like time for a new trainer.  Bummer.

  • I got rid of my old mag trainer last year cuz it had the same problem. Sometimes it would just 'seize' up and start hurting me!
Def sounds like something is broken.
