910xt - impressions thus far?

So I'm going to be in the market for a 910XT soon, and I've looked at some reviews and found that there were some significant issues that took Garmin a while to correct.  Little things like the pace being wildly off (like by a couple min/mile) and auto-shutting off when following a course.

The latest bug fix list from Garmin, dated November 2012, mentions fixing these (at least the random shutting off) - but I'm curious whether people here have found the 910XT to be as reliable as the forerunner series tends to be, or whether they've found it buggy (and if so, have the new updates actually fixed the issues?)

  • Ryan, I used a Garmin 305 for many years and recently (July of 2012) switched to the 910XT and love it. I have not noticed any of the issues you mentioned but only used the course feature once just to check it out. I have not noticed any pace issues either and used it on the track for interval work and for two olympics and a sprint and a few other 10KM/10M road races and the pace always seemed correct. Overall, I have been very happy with the 910...the increased functionality has been fantastic. Let me know if you have any other specific questions that you'd like me to check on for you.
  • I recently made the same move as Doug, from 305 (for years!) to 910XT, but don't have nearly as many miles as him I'm sure. My initial assessment is that if you're familiar with Garmins and how they work, this one seems to be the easiest yet!
  • I used the 910xt this summer for all my in-season training and racing and loved it. No problems whatsoever. The pace issue was fixed early on and only affected the "current pace", which I do not use (I use lap pace). So overall a great experience.
  • I used it all season and it survived HIM and IM training and racing without any issues. Works well in and out of the water. I used it for swimming 3 times a week and it survived without incident. I also used it as my fall back powermetter at Louisville (long story) and it saved my day. Good piece of kit!
  • I've also been using a 910xt for all three sports for about a year, and it's great. Two things to note however. I have had three failed comfort strap HR monitor straps. Not sure why that is. I recently got the older style HR strap with the plastic front, and hope that is more durable. As luck would have it two of the failed HR straps died during HIM races on the run. Was not happy about that.

Also, the instantaneous pace using GPS seems very uneven to me. I never had a 310 so don't know how it compares to that. But I always use a footpod, and calibrate the footpod to my threshold pace, and the instantaneous pace from that is dead-on accurate and does not jump around. And it is still good (but not as good) at slower paces - but certainly good enough.

Even with those two issues, I would still buy it again.
  •  It's the best $$ I've spent on a device. I have all my workouts in it...and can set it and go. As the others have said I haven't seen any issues with the pacing. I was never a competative swimmer - so the lap calcs, pacing and times are a huge help. I just never figured out the swim clocks. As Ian mentioned I still have my 500 on my bike and the 910 in parrallel.

  • I got mine last month and love it. Switched from the 305 and never looked back. I feel that I am now just getting comfortable in customizing and digging into all the features the 910 offers.
  • Anyone know what the difference between the 'standard' and 'Pacific' version is? Reason I ask is that I found a website selling at a decent discount ($330) but the website is an Australian address, and the SKU of the unit is the Pacific version.
If it's just an inventory thing for Garmin in terms of where they sold units, I don't care - but if there's a difference in terms of which GPS satellites it is programmed to receive from - well, then trying to use in around the East Coast may not work too well image
  • Had many of the older models, have the 910xt and with the updated firmware I can honestly says it is FABULOUS. No bugs left and YES there were some initially but mine at least is now hunky dory. Workouts pop into Garmin Connect before your gym bag hits the floor and into most other logging sites smoothly. Then boy oh boy you can slice and dice some data. ESPECIALLY good stuff on the swim metrics side. Check out DC Rainmaker's review if you haven't already. I smell the plastic strip of a credit card burning soon... :-)
  • I got my first one last year and it was great.

    "My first one" you ask?

Yes. That's because I stupidly bought the wrist strap that allows you to move the unit from wrist to bike with a simple twist. I was experimenting in training with what I was going to use on the bike at IMCDA. I never put the regular wrist strap back on it, even though I decided to use my Joule on the bike during the race. So as I look down at my watch as I exit the water on the first lap, I look down and see..........an empty wrist strap. The swim contact dislodged it and it fell to the bottom of the lake. $449 + tax/shipping gone.

I picked up my second one and it continues to perform flawlessly. I would highly recommend doing as others suggest and have a separate computer on the bike with the 910 recording/displaying as backup securely on your wrist. I'll certainly never make that mistake again.
  • I really like mine for bricks or big Tri days, open water swims and definitely race with it, but for riding I use a Garmin 500 and for running I use a Garmin 610. I know I have issues, but it is still cheaper than a drug problem...

The thing is multi-sport is good, but specialization is still better. The 500 has more screens and options. It also sits really nicely on my k-edge. The 610 is just slimmer on my wrist and I actually will often wear it all day if I am feeling sporty. The 210 is really similar, but don't get me started.... image
  • Holy crap, Terry - I'm glad you mentioned possibility of contact knocking it off the wrist! I have the mount thing for my 305 as well, and I like it - but I won't be doing the same for the 910 (whenever I get it)! Besides, I have the LYC from my powertap to give me info I need there, including HR.

Dino - totally hear you on specialization. At some point, I'm sure I'll get a dedicated bike computer - but it may not be until my current wired PT dies and I go with either a wireless PT or a quarq, when I'll be forced to get something like a Joule or a 500.

During wetsuit swims, I avoid the problem of losing it off my wrist by putting my wetsuit on *over* my Garmin.  I turn it on, set it for Auto Multisport, and check for satellite acquisition.  Then I put on my wetsuit and leave the sleeve over it.  The buttons work fine by pushing through the neoprene, and I avoid losing it during the swim plus I don't have any problems taking the wetsuit off in T1.
