Bumping plans

Thinking of bumping from beginner OS to intermediate.  Main difference seems to be more VO2 intervals (a lot more), and longer run intervals (but the same mileage volume).  E.g., 2 miles in Int = 4x800 in Beginner.  Could be that this is a rest week, but I'm beginning to feel like I want to handle more.  Anyone bumped after a month?

  • I was happy with an Int plan to start with as I had a few tri seasons under my belt. If you feel like you can do it give it a try as long as your not injured why not. After all a lot of this is about self coaching and bouncing your questions off of this sounding board gives you some 2 cent along the way.
  • Really only you can answer that question. I did intermediate plan last year after a 20 year lay off. It was hard and frankly think I spent most of season overtrained
  • From what I've read of the coaches answer on this one in the past, if you've made it through the first month to 6 weeks of a plan and are wanting more, it is fine to bump it up. You can always drop back if need, but you have to be honest with yourself to see how it feels and adjust accordingly. I'd say, give it a go mate.
  • If your head is in a place where it's asking this question, then it's probably time to bump it up.

Worst case scenario is intermediate is too spicy and you circle back to beginner.

  • Also: the Vo2 portion of the OS is where most athletes start to struggle. If you're at *all* feeling overtrained, drop back. Much better to eat a little humble pie now than to fry the rest of your season.
  • How re you doing on the other work? Meaning, you nail the sets, but what about the "do the rest how you feel, but try to get as much as you can 85% FTP or marathon pace". Fatigue starts to show here first generally. I find that when I can gut through the work, but then have nothing left for the moderate stuff, I am on the edge.

So how has the moderate stuff been going? Are you doing it or cutting it short? All that said, if you like like jumping, go for it.
  • Fine. Sometimes I do the extra time, sometimes I don't. It mostly depends on where my head is on a given day. The 30/30s in the beginner plan felt too easy at the target wattage. The intermediate V02 workouts look... challenging. Looking fwd to giving that a whirl this Thurs. Also, due to injury, I don't think I'm running as hard as I'm "capable" of just yet--still activating the posterior chain and all that. I tend to keep that time down to the bare minimum, but have worked up to a comfortable 50 min. But it's starting to feel better and the z4 paces are starting to feel more like z3s.

Here's a question--I'm the lone december OS. Healing injury in November, didn't want to waste a hundred bucks and wait for January. Which group do I talk to? Or am I all alone?
  • @ Chris ... Play with the JOS. Nov will be done in 4 weeks, and you'll have more than a month to go. Last two years I routinely started in early-mid Dec and joined the JOS group.
